Women’s Ice Hockey Defeats Toronto, 5-2, in Exhibition Play – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s ice hockey team (0-0 overall, 0-0 WCHA) opened the 2003-04 season defeating the Toronto Varsity Blues (0-0, 0-0 OUA), 5-2, in an exhibition game Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink in Columbus, Ohio. The win and stats will not count in OSU’s overall season statistics.
The game marked the fourth time OSU and UT have met in exhibition action. After the victory, the Buckeyes continue to lead the series 3-1.
Three of Ohio State’s five goals were scored in the first period, Heather Farrell (Sr., Perth, Ontario) tipped in a shot from Lacey Schultz (Fr., Kelvington, Saskatchewan) to score the first goal of the game at 7:50. Farrell’s goal got the Buckeyes on a roll, less then two minutes later captain Meaghan Mulvaney (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) posted OSU’s second goal of the game, assisted by Jeanne Chapple (Sr., Vadnais Heights, Minn.). Mulvaney scored again on a power-play goal at 12:06, assisted by freshman Tessa Bonhomme (Fr., Sudbury, Ontario). OSU outshot UT 17-2 in the first stanza.
Toronto attempted to reduce the OSU advantage, as UT’s Katie Dowdall scored her first of two goals for the Varsity Blues at 8:41 in the second period. Toronto could not stop the power of Mulvaney who recorded her third goal of the game and second power-play goal at 10:42. The goal was assisted by senior Emma Laaksonen (Sr., Espoo, Finland) and Chapple. The Buckeyes outshot the Varsity Blues 13-7 in the second period.
OSU increased its 3-1 lead, as sophomore Jana Harrigan tallied an even strength goal at 6:12 in the third period. Toronto was able to capitalize on one of its three power-play opportunities as Dowdell recorded her second goal of the game at 15:29.
OSU goaltender Melissa Glaser (Jr., Rockford, Ill.) recorded 14 saves and allowed two goals. Lisa Robertson and Stephanie Lockert split in the net for Toronto. Robertson started the game, playing 30:40, and posting 22 saves while allowing four goals. Lockert saved 19 shots and allowed one goal in the last 29:18 of action.
Ohio State outshot Toronto 46-16. The OSU penalty-killing unit held UT to one of three power-play chances, while the Buckeyes converted on two of five.
The Buckeyes return to action at 2:05 p.m. Saturday when they face Toronto again for game two of the series. Ohio State begins the regular season and WCHA action against the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 7:05 p.m. Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn.
