COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s gymnastics team topped Illinois-Chicago, 210.65 to 207.600 Saturday in the home and dual season opener at St John Arena. The Buckeyes took a step down in total score from their first place finish at the Jan. 11 Windy City Invitational where they compiled 213.00 points. Sophomore Randy Monahan (Elizabethtown, Pa.) tallied 52.95 points and took first place in the all-around and senior captain Dick Huntwork (Pickerington, Ohio) placed third by posting 51.75 points.
Although Ohio State compiled 2.35 points less than the first event of the year, there were team point improvements on floor (35.70 to 36.20), rings (36.65 to 35.25) and high bar (34.80 to 35.55). The most detrimental event for the Buckeyes was pommel horse where the team dropped from 35.85 points, scored two weeks ago, to 31.85 points. The pommel horse was the only event that UIC scored higher than OSU.
Kerry Adderly (So./Orlando, Fla.) had career records on rings (8.95) and on parallel bar (9.0). Matthew Smith (Sr./Salt Lake City), a rings specialist, recorded a career-high 9.45 in his event. Since the Windy City Invitational, Huntwork improved on rings, parallel bar and high bar while raising his all-around career-high from 49.8 to 51.75.
“We trained hard all week,” Huntwork said. “To come in here on Saturday and to do our best is hard. Pommel Horse is usually the killer event in gymnastics. We have to learn from our performance today and focus on our weaknesses in the gym.”
“I’m a little disappointed,” Miles Avery, OSU head coach, said. “Typically, as the season progress, we should improve. This was not a huge step back. We didn’t back down in practice this week, we trained through the event, not up to it and this is our last week of training like that. The guys were tired and home nerves had a effect on our performance. From here on out, for training it is quality, not quantity.”
