Volleyball Blanked By Texas In Ohio State Invitational Championship Match – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State (5-3) women’s volleyball team could not overcome a strong Texas (8-1) squad as the Longhorns captured the Ohio State Invitational with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-23, 30-28) victory in the championship match. Earlier in the day, Loyola-Chicago (4-3) defeated Akron (5-3) in the consolation match with a 3-1 (30-25, 33-31, 29-31, 30-26) win. UT’s Mira Topic (So., Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) scored a match-high 19 kills for Texas with Kathy Hahn (So., Leander, Texas) adding 11. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a team-high 12 kills for OSU with Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) adding eight each. Gordon has now scored double-figure kills in her last 24 matches.
Texas overcame an early 9-5 Ohio State lead and took a 10-9 lead with a LaTonya Coates (So., Bangor, Mich.) ace serve. A Coates service error tied the game at 10. A kill and ace serve by Hahn and two OSU errors opened a 14-10 Longhorn lead. Trailing 21-18, OSU closed to within one at 21-20 with a Gordon kill and a block by Katherine Grant (Fr., Nashville, Tenn.) and Draeger. A Topic kill and two OSU errors gave Texas a 24-20 lead that they would hold for a 30-24 win. Texas hit .367 for game one to .120 for Ohio State.
Texas opened game two with two Topic kills and an OSU error for a 3-0 lead. Texas would hold the lead for the game to win, 30-23 and go up 3-0 in the match. The Longhorns hit .313 in the game to .185 for OSU.
Game three remained close with 16 ties. A 25-all, Texas off two OSU errors and an ace serve by Coates opened a 28-25 lead. Following an Ohio State time out, a kill by Draeger and a block by Stiling and Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) cut the lead to 28-27 as Texas called time out. A Draeger kill tied the game at 28 but back-to-back kills by Topic closed out the game at 30-28 and gave Texas the match, 3-0. The Longhorns hit .313 for the game to .194 for Ohio State. For the match Texas hit .330 to OSU’s .170. The Longhorns had a 47-38 advantage in kills and a 6-3 margin in ace serves. UT gave up 15-service error to 12 for Ohio State. Each squad had 26 digs and the teams recorded six blocks each.
Name to the Ohio State Invitational All-Tournament team were Kristen Daly, Loyola-Chicago; Sandy Lewis, Akron; Suzie Stiling, Ohio State; Stacey Gordon, Ohio State; Caron Blotch, Texas and Kathy Hahn, Texas. UT’s Mira Topic was named the most valuable player of the Invitational.
Ohio State returns to action at 7 p.m. next Wednesday when OSU hosts Miami (Ohio).
