No. 9 Volleyball Defeats Loyola-Chicago, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Behind a 23-kill, 15 dig performance by OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario), the ninth-ranked Ohio State (5-2) women’s volleyball team captured a 3-1 (30-19, 31-29, 22-30, 30-23) win over Loyola-Chicago (3-3) in the semifinals of the Ohio State Invitational in St. John Arena. OSU will face Texas (7-1), a 3-1 (28-30, 30-25, 30-21, 30-12) winner over Akron (5-2) in the first semifinal, at 8 p.m. Saturday in St. John Arena in the championship match. Akron and Loyola will face off at noon in the Larkins Hall Exhibition Gym in the consolation match.
Joining Gordon in double-figure kills for the Buckeyes were Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) with 11 and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) with 10. Rambler Kristen Daly (Sr., Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high 21 kills for Loyola-Chicago.
Ohio State quickly opened a 7-1 lead in game one, building the lead to 10 at 19-9. The Buckeyes took the game 30-19 while hitting .276 to .067 for Loyola.
Game two saw the Buckeyes take a small lead early and hold the lead the entire game. At 23-21, OSU, two Rambler errors and kills by Gordon and Jackie Schardt (Fr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) gave Ohio State a 27-21 lead. A Shari Davis (Sr., Denver, Iowa) kill and a Gordon kill moved the score to 28-22. Loyola collected a Davis kill and solo block, two OSU errors and an ace serve by Daly to cut the lead to 28-27. Draeger responded with a kill to set game point at 29-27. An OSU service error and a block by Culos Carrie (Jr., Harper Woods, Mich.) and Lauren Holbrook (So., Indianapolis, Ind.) allowed Loyola to tie the game at 29. A kill by Draeger and a Rambler error ended the game at 31-29 for the Buckeyes. Ohio State hit .140 for the game to .033 for Loyola. The Ramblers opened a 5-0 lead in game three. The Buckeyes closed to 8-6 with a Stiling kill but would get no closer as Loyola won the game, 30-22. Loyola hit .316 for the game to .211 for the Buckeyes.
From a 4-all tied in game four, Loyola took a 6-4 lead with a kill by Nichol Amberg (So., Tulsa, Okla.) and an OSU error. Kills by Gordon and Draeger tied the game at six. Tied at seven, kills by Gordon and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) a Rambler error and a block by Andersson, Stiling and Draeger put Ohio State ahead, 11-7. Loyola would close to 11-10 off three OSU errors but two Rambler errors made it 13-10. OSU continued to add to the lead, winning the game, 30-23, to end the match. OSU hit 412 for the game to .133 for the Ramblers.
Ohio State hit .250 for the match while Loyola hit .148. OSU had a 62-42 advantage in kills while each squad recorded eight ace serves. The Buckeyes gave up 19 service errors to 14 for the Ramblers. OSU had a 56-45 advantage in digs while Loyola out blocked Ohio State, 8-5.
