COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ninth-ranked Ohio State (4-2) used a career-high 33-kill performance by outside hitter Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) to gain a 3-1 (30-28, 30-13, 23-30, 30-24) non-conference win over Illinois-Chicago (6-2) Tuesday night in the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill. Gordon’s previous career-high was 30 kills at Purdue in 2001. Joining Gordon in double-figure kills for the Buckeyes was Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) who also recorded a match-high 17 digs. The Flames had Lindsey Filkins (Jr., Downers Grove, Ill.) record a team-high 12 kills with Lara Clarkson (Sr., LaPorte, Ind.) adding 11.
Gordon’s 33-kill performance was her 22nd consecutive double-figure kill match over the last two seasons. For her career, the 2001 American Volleyball Coaches Association National Freshman of the Year and a second-team all-American, has had double-figure kills in 35 of 37 matches and has 12 matches with 20 or more kills.
Ohio State won a close game one, 30-28 while hitting .273 for the game with 21 kills. The Flames hit .132 for the game with 11 kills. The Buckeyes went ahead 2-0 in the match with a 30-13 game two win. OSU hit .483 for the game on 17 kills to .129 for Illinois-Chicago with nine kills. OSU trailed the entire game three as the Flames won 30-23. Illinois-Chicago hit .353 for the game on 15 kills while the Buckeyes hit .216 with 17 kills. Ohio State closed out the match with a 30-24 win in game four. OSU hit .368 on 18 kills while Illinois-Chicago hit .182 with 15 kills.
Team totals for the match show Ohio State hitting a season-high .324 to .197 for Illinois-Chicago. OSU had a 73-50 advantage in kills and had a 6-2 margin in ace serves. OSU’s Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) recorded a match and season-high three ace serves against the Flames. The Buckeyes had a 62-44 margin in digs led by Stiling’s match-high 17. OSU’s Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and UIC’s Julie Popp (Fr., Chicago, Ill.) recorded 13 digs apiece. Ohio State held the advantage in team blocking, 8-7. Buckeye Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) recorded a career-high eight total blocks (one solo, seven assists) in the match. OSU’s Virtue had a season-high 62 assists in the match and added seven digs and four assist blocks. UIC’s Meghan Keck (Jr., Western Springs, Ill.) recorded 34 assists.
Ohio State returns home this weekend to host the Ohio State Invitational. Akron (5-1) and Texas (6-1) will play at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 13 in the first semifinal and Ohio State faces Loyola-Chicago (3-2) at 7 p.m. in the second semifinal. The consolation match will be played at noon, Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Larkins Hall Exhibition Gym. The championship match is scheduled for 8 p.m. in St. John Arena.
