HONOLULU, Hawaii – Ninth-ranked Ohio State (0-1) opened the 2002 season with a 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-23) loss to fourth-ranked Hawaii (1-0). OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) collected team-highs of 13 kills and 15 digs for the Buckeyes with Maria Pongonis (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) adding nine kills. Rainbow Wahine Kim Willoughby (Jr., Napoleonville, LA) had a match-high 18 kills with Lauren Duggins (Jr., Fullerton, Calif.) adding 10 kills and 11 digs.
The Buckeyes opened game one with 2-0 and 4-1 leads. With OSU leading 10-8, a Wahine kill by Lily Kahumoku (Jr., Lubbuck, Texas) and a Buckeye error tied the game at 10. Hawaii took an 11-10 lead off a Buckeye error. A Pongonis kill tied the game at 11. A Hawaii error put OSU ahead, 12-11. A Kahumoku kill tied the game at 12 and a Buckeye error gave the Wahine the lead for good at 13-12. Hawaii closed out the game on a Willoughby kill for a 30-24 win. The Wahine hit .175 for the game with 15 kills with the Buckeyes hitting .095 with 13 kills.
Game two opened with close play and saw the score tied at five. Kills by Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the Buckeyes a 7-5 lead. The Buckeyes build a 12-8 lead with a three-point run off a Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) kill, a Hawaii error and a Draeger ace. After a Wahine time out, Hawaii scored the next five points to take a 13-12 lead. After four ties, the last at 18, a Willoughby kill gave Hawaii a 19-18 lead, holding it for a final 30-24 mark for the game. Hawaii hit .425 on 19 kills for the game to .156 for Ohio State on 17 kills.
OSU opened game three with a Pongonis kill for a 1-0 lead. The Wahine quickly took a 3-1 lead. Ohio State, trailing 7-6, tied the game at seven with a block by Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Higgins. Hawaii regained the lead at 8-7 and a Pongonis kill tied the game at eight. Hawaii scored the next five point to open up a 13-8 lead. Hawaii built up a 10-point lead several times and closed out the match with a 30-23 win. The Wahine hit .250 for the game with 11 kills while OSU hit .077 with 13 kills.
For the match, Hawaii hit .287 to .l11 for the Buckeyes. The Wahine had a 45-43 advantage in kills and collected three aces to two for OSU. Each team gave up 12 service errors. Hawaii had a 44-38 advantage in digs and outblocked Ohio State, 10 to 3.5.
Tournament play continues Saturday with Ohio State plays Colorado (0-1) at 2 p.m. (8 p.m. EDT). No. 21 Colorado lost 3-1 (30-15, 30-28, 26-30, 30-27) to 11th ranked UCLA (1-0) in the first match Friday night.
Buckeye Notes:
* Stacey Gordon’s double-double of 13 kills and 15 digs extended her streak of double-doubles to eight. Gordon has had double-figure kills in her last 17 matches.
* Freshmen Maria Pongonis and Anna Andersson were in the starting lineup for the first game of the season. Other freshmen seeing action included Stephanie Higgins and Jackie Schardt.
* Heather Whalen played the libero position for the entire match. She had five digs against Hawaii.
* The announced attendance for the two-match session Friday was 9,495. That represents the largest crowd that Ohio State has played in front of on the road. The previous record was 7,077 in an 0-3 loss to Stanford in the NCAA National Championship semifinals on Dec. 12, 1994, played at Texas.
