COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State women’s volleyball student-athlete Jen Flynn (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been named the starting setter for Team USA as the squad prepares for the World Championship in Dresden, Germany.
Flynn will start today’s match against Argentina, according to head coach Toshi Yoshida. “We still have setting problems,” Yoshida admits. “Our middles do not connect with the setter as much as we want. And we cannot expect good passing right now. So we might have to rely on our outside hitters. If that is the case, it is not good for us.” Team captain and starting setter Robyn Ah Mow (Honolulu, Hawaii/Hawai’i) is pregnant with her first child and will not play in the World Championships. For the first match against Argentina, Yoshida has decided to start Jen Flynn. “It seems like she connects with the others better,” he revealed. This past season Flynn was the starting setter for the Grand Rapids Force of the United States Professional Volleyball league (USPV). Lizzy Fitzgerald (New Orleans, La./Wisconsin) also figures to see playing time at setter for the United States. The 5-9 Flynn played 128 consecutive matches for the Buckeyes, helping the team to four consecutive NCAA appearances. The versatile Flynn played outside hitter as a freshman and senior and was the setter for her sophomore and junior years.
After playing Argentina, the U.S. will face the top-ranked Russia on Saturday, August 31 and the Dominican Republic on Sunday, September 1. The U.S. concludes pool play against Puerto Rico (September 2) and Kenya (September 3).
The top three teams from each pool advance to the second round of the tournament, which is being held in various sites around Germany. A total of 24 countries are participating in the event.
