Miles Avery, Ohio State head coach, was elected unanimously to serve on the 12-member United States Men’s Gymnastics Program Committee by the senior national team coaches. The two-year term will run though the 2004 Olympics.
The committee will be involved with almost all major decisions made about men’s gymnastics in the U.S. such as rules, teams and procedures. Included on the docket are the tasks of selecting the 2004 Olympic team as well as the teams to compete in the 2002 and 2003 World Championships.
“I am honored my peers thought very highly of me in order to put me on this committee through the Olympic Games,” Avery said about the elected position.
Under Avery’s guidance over the last five years, the Ohio State men’s gymnastics teams have produced one national title, two Big Ten titles, two NCAA all-around champions and 11 All-Americans. Avery has garnered one national coach of the year honor and two-consecutive Big Ten Coach of the Year awards.
“This is a very important committee to be on,” Avery said. “It’s nice to know I will be intimately involved with USA Gymnastics and its decisions.”
Avery, already involved in USA Gymnastics, will serve as the head coach for the United States National Team in a dual meet with China on Aug. 19 in Beijing.
