COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team rallied to score the final seven goals of the game to defeat Ohio State, 11-7, in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
The loss ends the No. 12-ranked Buckeyes’ season at 11-5. The No. 7 Irish improve to 13-4 overall and advance to face Princeton in the quarterfinal round.
Lauren Cochran (Sr., Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) led Ohio State with three goals, while Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa./Pottstown) added two for the squad. Sophomore Meredith Simon led the Irish with three goals and two assists while seniors Alissa Moser and Natalie Loftus and sophomore Kassen Delano each scored twice.
Ohio State jumped out to a 4-1 lead first half lead. Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) opened the scoring with a free position goal just under six minutes into the game, before ND’s Weille tied the game with 21:06 remaining. The Buckeyes responded with three consecutive goals to go up, 4-1. Cochran scored with 18:40 remaining, followed by Oliver’s tally at 15:51. Cochran ended the Buckeyes’ goal spurt, scoring with 10:43 remaining.
The Irish’s Moser then scored back-to-back goals at 7:19 and 4:09, to cut OSU’s lead to one (4-3). OSU’s Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va./Robinson) tallied with 2:09 left in the half to put Ohio State up by two, 5-3.
Notre Dame’s Simon scored just 46 seconds into the second half before Cochran and Oliver tallied for the Buckeyes at 28:14 and 23:12, respectively, to put Ohio State ahead by three, 7-4.
The Irish then had a seven-goal outburst to put the game out of reach for the Buckeyes. Danielle Shearer scored a free-position goal with 19:54 remaining, before Loftus scored back-to-back goals within 1:54 to tie the game at seven. Simon gave Notre Dame the lead for good with 10:56 remaining and then scored at 7:45 to make the score 9-7. Delano ended the scoring with goals at 5:18 and 1:13.
The Irish outshot Ohio State 22-16 in the game. Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) had 11 stops for Ohio State, while Jen White made 11 saves for the Irish.
