Buckeyes Earn All-Great Western Lacrosse League Honors – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Seven members of the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team have been honored by the Great Western Lacrosse League as all-conference selections, the GWLL today announced. Attackman Curtis Smith (Jr., Victoria, British Columbia/Oak Bay), long stick midfielder John DiCamillo (Sr., Baltimore, Md./St. Paul’s) and defenseman Greg Bice (So., Helotes, Texas/St. Mary’s Hall) were named to the first team. Attackmen Mike Norton (Jr., Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and Anthony Gilardi (So., Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin), midfielder Pat Myers (Jr., Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) and goalie Tony Russo (So., Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) each earned second-team honors.
Smith, a GWLL second-team selection last season, led the Buckeyes in goals (38) and points (50), both career bests. He is tied for 19th in program history with 102 career points. Smith is ninth in the nation (tied) in goals per game (2.71) and 17th (tied) in the NCAA in points per game (3.57). He was a two-time GWLL Player of the Week.
DiCamillo, a Buckeye co-captain, played in all 14 games and scored a career-high three goals. He was fourth on the squad with 38 groundballs.
Bice started every game for the squad this season, picking up 47 groundballs to rank third on the team. He was named the GWLL Player of the Week April 30 after an outstanding performance against Butler. He had a career-best two points against Butler, including his only goal and assist of the season, and held the Bulldogs’ top player scoreless. He was a preseason All-America selection by Face-Off Magazine.
Norton led the Buckeyes with 25 assists this season and was third on the team with a career-high 37 points. Norton ranks 12th in the nation (tied) in assists per game (1.79). He had a point in each game this season. Gilardi was second on the team in scoring with 32 goals, 14 assists and 46 points. He is tied for 20th in the nation in goals per game (2.29). Gilardi was the only Buckeye to score at least one goal in every game this season.
Myers, the 2000 GWLL Rookie of the Year, had 13 goals, 10 assists and 23 points to rank fourth for the Buckeyes. He led the squad against Butler with a season-high three goals and an assist.
Russo had an outstanding season in goal. He started every game, posting a goals-against average of 7.16 to rank sixth in the nation. His save percentage of .634 is the third-highest in the NCAA. Russo earned conference player of the week honors after an impressive performance against Drexel.
The Buckeyes ended the season 9-5 overall and finished third in the GWLL with a 3-2 record. The squad was outstanding defensively all season, holding opponents to 7.14 goals per game to rank third in the nation. The squad is tied for fourth in the country in man-up offense, scoring on 42.9 percent of its chances.
Fairfield goalie C.J. Kemp was named the GWLL Player of the Year and the Stags’ Ted Spencer received coach of the year honors. Denver freshman attackman Matt Brown was the GWLL Newcomer of the Year. Fairfield and Notre Dame shared the league title with identical 4-1 records, with the Stags earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
