Men’s Golf 8th With One Round to Play at 2002 Big Ten Tournament – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State men’s golf team enters the final round Sunday of the 2002 Big Ten Men’s Golf Tournament in eighth place after shooting 295-285-295=875 after the first 54 holes of the 72-hole tournament. The event is being played at Finkbine Golf Course (7,002, Par 72) with the University of Iowa serving as host.
The tournament concludes Sunday with the final round. Ohio State must catch Northwestern for a chance to play in the NCAA Central Regionals May 16-19 in Little Rock, Ark. Northwestern and the Buckeyes are battling for the sixth and final spot from District IV to advance to the central regional. Northwestern has defeated Ohio State twice this season with the Buckeyes owning one victory in head-to-head competition.
The Wildcats owned a three-stroke advantage over Ohio State heading into the Big Ten tournament. The Buckeyes must beat Northwestern by more than three strokes Sunday to qualify for regional play. Northwestern is in fifth place after three rounds of the Big Ten tournament, leading the Buckeyes by seven strokes.
Purdue is the tournament leader (279-289-293=861) with a two-shot lead over Illinois (294-287-281=863).
Ohio State senior Doug Wade (73-69-74=216) leads the Buckeyes individually tied for eighth. Junior Justin Collins is tied for 20th (72-72-75=219).
Eric Jorgensen of Michigan State (70-72-69=211), Andrew Matthews of Michigan (72-69-70=211) and Chris Mayson of Purdue (68-73-70=211) are tied for the tournament lead with 18-holes to play.
