COLUMBUS, Ohio-Georgia Tech (+1, 853) and Tulsa (+2, 854) are the leaders after three rounds at the 2002 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships being held at The Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
Georgia Tech shot a 290 (+ 6) Friday to hold its lead with 18 holes to play Saturday. Tulsa shot an even par 284 Friday to move to second place.
Clemson (+9) shot 14-over in the third round to fall to 13th place after leading the second round.
The top five teams are separated by three shots. Washington (+3), Minnesota (+4) North Carolina (+4) and Texas (+4) along with North Carolina, Pepperdine and Toledo (all +6) all are within striking distance of the title.
The championship was suspended for the third-consecutive day because of rain in the Columbus area. The competition was delayed about two hours and finished at 9:09 EDT.
Teams were removed from the Scarlet Course at 5:57 p.m. EDT Friday when thunder, lightning and rain halted play and returned to play at 7:55 p.m.
Graeme McDowell of UAB is the tournament individual leader at 8-under par. McDowell finished the third round 4-under, posting back-to-back rounds of 67. Oklahoma State’s Hunter Mahan is close behind at 7-under, 4-under Friday.
The final round of play begins at 7 a.m. Saturday.
