COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State men’s golf team is 12th after the first round of the 2002 NCAA West Regional golf tournament being played at the University of New Mexico Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. The par 72 course measures 7,368 yards.
The Buckeyes fired a 295, just five shots out of third place. Texas is the leader with a 285.
Ohio State sophomore Zach Doran (Dublin, Ohio/Columbus, Ohio) shot a 1-under 71 to lead the Buckeyes. He is tied for 14th overall.
Jason Hartwick of Texas is the tournament leader after a first round 68.
The 54-hole tournament continues with 18 holes both Friday and Saturday.
The Buckeyes must finish among the Top 10 teams among the 27 squads in the west regional to advance to the 2002 NCAA Championships May 29-June 1 in Columbus. That event will be played at The OSU Scarlet Course (7,236, par 71).
Two other regional competitions also are underway in the East and Central regions. Ten teams from each region along with the top two individuals not on one of the qualifying teams will advance to play for the national title in Columbus.
