COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team has closed out the most successful season in the seven-year history of the program. The Buckeyes finished the 2002 season with an 11-5 overall record and finished in a three-way tie for second place in the American Lacrosse Conference with a 4-2 mark. OSU recorded the most wins in a season in the history of the program. The Buckeyes finished the regular season ranked 12th in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Poll. Ohio State received its first-ever bid to the 16-team NCAA Championship to close out a great year.
BUCKEYES RECORD A SEASON-HIGH 11 VICTORIES
With a 12-6 win at Ohio, OSU recorded its 11th win of the season, the most wins for a season in the history of Ohio State women’s lacrosse. The Buckeyes previous best win total was 10 victories in the 1999 season when OSU was 10-5.

OHIO STATE RANKED NO. 12 IN THE FINAL IWLCA POLL
Ohio State was No. 12 in the final Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll at the end of the regular season. This marks the highest ranking for Ohio State in the seven-year history of the program. The Buckeyes made their first-ever appearance this season in the poll at No. 20 after defeating No. 20 Boston University, 16-7. OSU advanced to No. 13 after upsetting No. 7 Maryland, 12-11. The Buckeyes dropped to No. 18 in mid-April but advanced to their final ranking of No. 12 as the regular season ended. OSU collected two wins over top-10 teams this season. Besides the win at Maryland, OSU defeated No. 9 Notre Dame, 12-11. The Buckeyes were 4-4 against ranked teams this season.

A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes finished the 2002 season 11-5 overall and was 4-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) is the team leader in goals with 53. Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second with 36. Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) ranks third on the squad with 28 goals and Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario) and Lauren Cochran (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) are tied for fourth with 23. Bounds has a team-high 25 assists with Alexia Vogler (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) second with 15 and Oliver third with 12. Defensively, Oliver has a team-high 51 caused turnovers and co-leads the squad in ground balls with 44. Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario) ranks second in caused turnovers with 33 and is tied for second in ground balls with 44. In goal, Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) has started all 16 games and has recorded 176 saves (.561) and has given up 138 goals (8.86 goals against average). The Buckeyes are averaging 13.19 goals per game and are giving up 8.75 per game.
NOTRE DAME RECAP
Ohio State, in its first-ever NCAA Championship appearance, could not overcome seven consecutive goals by Notre Dame in the second half in an 11-7 loss. Tracey Bounds gave OSU a 1-0 lead but Eleanor Weille tied the game at one. OSU, with two goals by Lauren Cochran and one from Regina Oliver took a 4-1 lead midway in the first half. Notre Dame responded with two goals by Alissa Moser to cut the lead to 4-3. Megan Mirick’s goal gave OSU a 5-3 halftime lead. Notre Dame opened the second half with a Meredith Simon goal to cut the lead to one at 5-4. OSU goals by Cochran and Oliver opened a 7-4 Buckeye lead at 36:48. The Irish responded with a Danielle Shearer goal and two by Natalie Loftus to tie the game at seven. Simon’s second goal of the game gave Notre Dame an 8-7 lead. Simon added another goal and Kassen Delano two more for the 11-7 Notre Dame win. OSU’s Lauren Cochran finished the three goals with Oliver recording two. Notre Dame’s Simon had a team-high three goals with Delano, Moser and Loftus adding two goals each. OSU’s Erin Forquer had 12 saves in goal while ND’s Jen White recorded eight saves.
FOUR OSU STUDENT-ATHLETES NAMED MID-ATLANTIC REGIONAL ALL-AMERICA
The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association has named four Ohio State student-athletics to the Mid-Atlantic Regional All-America Team. Receiving first team honors for the Buckeyes were Megan Mirick at attack and Shannon Wilson at midfield. Tracey Bounds at attack and Regina Oliver at midfield received second team honors.

THREE HONORED BY THE AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE
The American Lacrosse Conference has announced its honors for the inaugural season. Ohio State’s Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) and Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa) have been selected as the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively. Both Mirick and Oliver were also named to the All-Conference Team, as was OSU’s Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.). The trio is part of a 12-player squad voted on by the conference coaches.

FORQUER SETS SINGLE SEASON SAVES RECORD
With 12 saves against Notre Dame in the NCAA Championship, Erin Forquer set an Ohio State single season saves record with 176. She passed Nicole Morris who had 174 in 1997. Forquer was in goal for a season-high 11 wins this year.
MIRICK BREAKS HER OWN SEASON GOAL RECORD
Megan Mirick finished the 2002 season with an OSU single season record of 53 goals. With her five goals at Virginia Tech, Mirick had raised her season goals total to 42 and broke her own OSU record for goals in a season of 39 in 1999.
BOUNDS ESTABLISHES SEASON RECORD FOR ASSISTS
Tracey Bounds, with an assist at Notre Dame, ends the 2002 season with an Ohio State season record of 25 assists. She broke the season record earlier this year with four assists against Davidson. The record of 21 had been held by Celeste Cianfrani in 2000. Bounds collected a game-high five assists at Northwestern this season to tie for second in OSU game records.
BOUNDS SETS SEASON RECORD FOR POINTS WITH 61
In a close scoring battle, Tracey Bounds finished the 2002 season with 61 points to set the Ohio State season record. She ended the season with 36 goals and 25 assists, finishing two points ahead of teammate Megan Mirick’s 59 points on 53 goals and six assists. Earlier in the season, Mirick broke the season points record of 53 (36-17) held by Erin Andersen in 1999. Bounds came on strong toward the end of the season to overtake Mirick and claim the record.
WILSON MAKES HER MARK IN THE MIDFIELD
Named a first team Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American, Shannon Wilson made a major contribution to the Buckeye squad this season. She had 23 goals and eight assists for 31 points and produced 44 ground balls, caused 33 turnovers and had 16 draw controls.
OLIVER SHINES IN HER FRESHMAN SEASON
Regina Oliver made a major impact for Ohio State in her freshman season. A starter in all 16 games, Oliver proved to be a force in the midfield as she recorded team-highs of 51 caused turnovers and 44 ground balls. She was third on the team in draw controls with 24. Offensively, Oliver contributed 40 points to finish third in scoring for Ohio State. Oliver ranked third in goals with 28 and third in assists with 12. She was recognized for her accomplishments being named the American Lacrosse Conference Rookie of the Year, an ALC All-Conference selection and was one of four Buckeyes named the ALC Player of the Week. Oliver was also named a second team Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American.
BUCKEYES LOSE SEVEN SENIORS FROM THE 2002 SQUAD
The success of the 2002 team was in part due to the senior class. Seven seniors have completed their playing careers for the Buckeyes. The players are Allison Blanton, Lauren Cochran, Trish Derwart, Trisha Miller, Megan Mirick, Kylee Reade and Candace Taglianetti. Cochran, Miller and Mirick started all 16 games this season while Derwart started 10 of the 12 games she played in. Reade saw action in all 16 games with Taglianetti playing in four games and Blanton in three. All seven players contributed in making this season the most successful season in the history of Ohio State women’s lacrosse.
MIRICK ENDS COLLEGIATE PLAY WITH TWO CAREER RECORDS
Megan Mirick has ended her playing career with Ohio State, but her name will remain in the career records for the Buckeyes. Mirick ended her four-year career with 143 goals and 182 points, both Ohio State career records. She held the career goals record from the 2001 season and set the career points record earlier this season.
OHIO STATE IN THE ALC STATISTICS
The Buckeyes have two student-athletes atop the American Lacrosse Conference overall statistics at the end of the regular season. OSU’s Regina Oliver leads the conference in caused turnovers at 3.27 per game and is sixth in ground balls at 2.87. Goalkeeper Erin Forquer leads the conference in goals against average at 8.72 and is second in save percentage at .564. Megan Mirick is second in goals per game at 3.47 and is third in scoring at 3.87 points per game. Lauren Cochran ranks fourth in draw controls at 2.00 per game while Shannon Wilson is eighth in ground balls with a 2.80 per game average. Tracey Bounds ranks second in scoring with a 3.93 per game average and is third in assists at 1.60. Ohio State ranks first in team offense with a 13.60 goals per game average and in defense with an 8.60 goals against average. OSU is first in draw controls averaging 13.00 per game and is ranked third in ground balls at 22.73 per game.

In NCAA statistics released last week, Ohio State is sixth in the country in scoring offense at 13.60 goals per game. The Buckeyes are seventh in scoring margin at 5.00 and tied for 13th in scoring defense at 8.60. Ohio State is tied for sixth in draw controls at 13.00 and is second in caused turnovers at 15.87. Individually, Megan Mirick is fifth in goals per game at 3.47 and 15th in points per game at 3.87. Regina Oliver is second in caused turnovers at 3.27 per game. Tracey Bounds ranks 13th in points per game at 3.93 and tied for 13th in assists per game at 1.60. Erin Forquer is 13th in the country in goals against average at 8.72 and 14th in saves percentage at .564. Shannon Wilson is tied for 23rd in caused turnovers at 2.07 per game.
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel has completed her seventh year as the head coach for Ohio State. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 54-46 at Ohio State and is 129-64 in her career. The 2002 season was her most successful with a program-high 11 wins and finishing the regular season ranked 12th nationally.
