COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked Ohio State (10-4 overall, 3-2 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad closes out the regular season with a 1 p.m., Saturday, May 4 contest at Ohio (9-5, 1-4). The game will be played at Peggy Pruitt Field in Athens, Ohio.
TRACEY BOUNDS NAMED ALC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The American Lacrosse Conference has named Tracey Bounds the conference Player of the week. Bounds had an outstanding two-game weekend with consecutive six-point games for the Buckeyes. She had three goals and three assists in Ohio State’s 15-12 victory over 15th-ranked Penn State on Friday. Her second goal of the game at 49:18 was the winning goal, giving Ohio State a 13-9 lead. Against Davidson, a 13-3 OSU victory, Bounds had two goals and four assists. She had two draw controls in each game. Bounds was also named an Honorable Mention National Player of the Week by insidelacrosse.com.
A LOOK AT OHIO
The Bobcats, coached by Anne Moelk, are 9-5 overall and 1-4 in the ALC. Ohio split a pair of home conference matches last week. The Bobcats defeated Davidson, 10-3, last Friday and lost to Penn State, 17-12, on Sunday. Lindsey Hart is the team leader in goals with 56 and is leading the nation with a 4.00 goals per game average. Lyns Keyz has 31 goals. Goalie Jen Cassidy has 165 saves and has a .554 saves percentage, ranking 17th in the country. Cassidy has given up 133 goals for a 10.50 per game average. Ohio averages 12.29 goals per game and is giving up 9.71.
THE OHIO STATE -OHIO SERIES
The Buckeyes have won all three contests played with Ohio. The first game, 18-6, was played in 1999. Ohio State won 22-7 in 2000 and 18-6 in 2001. All three games were played in Columbus.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes are 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference. The 16th-ranked Buckeyes upset 15th-ranked Penn State, 15-12 and defeated Davidson, 13-3 in home games last week. Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) is the team leader in goals with 51. Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second with 31. Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) ranks third on the squad with 25 goals and Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario) is fourth with 22. Bounds has a team-high 24 assists with Alexia Vogler (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) second with 14. In goal, Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) has started all 14 games and has recorded 147 saves (.549) and has given up 121 goals (8.90 goals against average). The Buckeyes are averaging 13.71 goals per game and are giving up 8.79 per game.
PENN STATE RECAP
Ohio State recorded its first victory in six attempted against the 15th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. Ohio State, ranked 16th, took a 4-0 lead in the game with two goals each from Megan Mirick and Shannon Wilson. PSU made it 4-1 before the Buckeyes ran the score to 9-1 with three goals from Regina Oliver and scores by Tracey Bounds and Wilson. The Nittany Lions came back with three goals to make the score 9-4. A Lauren Cochran goal closed out the half with OSU leading, 10-4. Penn State outscored Ohio State 8-5 in the second half but would come no closer than the final 15-12 score. The Nittany Lions cut the lead to 10-6 before Mirick and Oliver made it 12-6. PSU cut it to four at 12-8 but Bounds scored the winning goal making it 13-8. PSU made it 13-9 before goals by Wilson and Bounds closed out the Buckeye scoring, giving OSU a 15-9 lead. Penn State added three late goals to reach the final 15-12 score. OSU’s Oliver and Wilson had four goals each for Ohio State with Bounds and Mirick adding three each. Bounds also contributed three assists. Katie Jeschke had a game-high five goals for Penn State with Colleen O’Hara adding three and Katie Hartman two. OSU’s Erin Forquer had nine saves in goal for OSU with Penn State’s Lee Tortorelli recording 12.
DAVIDSON RECAP
Ohio State won its 10th game of the season with a 13-3 victory over Davidson to finish undefeated at home (6-0). The Buckeyes opened the scoring just six seconds into the game with a Megan Mirick goal. Mirick’s goal broke OSU’s season points record of 53 set by Erin Andersen in 1999. With three goals and an assist, Mirick now has 57 points on the season. OSU score the first five goals of the game before Davidson go on the scoreboard. The Buckeyes added two more for a 7-1 halftime lead. Ohio State outscored the Wildcats 6-2 in the second half for a 13-3 win. Mirick and Lauren Cochran had a game-high three goals each with Tracey Bounds and Shannon Wilson adding two each. Regina Oliver, Alexia Vogler and Kylee Reade added single tallies in the win. Bounds contributed four assists with Carrie Weatherill, Mirick, Noemi Hites, Reade and Vogler all adding an assist. Erin Forquer had 11 saves in the game (55:00) and gave up two goals. Allison Blanton played the final three minutes and had two saves and gave up one goal.
BOUNDS HAS OUTSTANDING WEEKEND
With consecutive six-point games, Tracey Bounds had an outstanding weekend for the Buckeyes. Bounds had three goals and three assists in OSU’s 15-12 win over Penn State including the winning goal of the game. Sunday in the 13-3 win over Davidson, Bounds collected two goals and four assists. The 12 points on the weekend gives her 55 points (31 goals, 24 assists) on the season and ranks her second behind Megan Mirick. Bounds now has 119 career points (79 goals, 40 assists) and is tied for fourth for career points with Laurie Rybak (1996-99) (69 goals, 50 assists).
BOUNDS SETS SEASON ASSIST RECORD
With her four assists against Davidson, Tracey Bounds has broken the Ohio State season assist record. Her 24 assists this season broke the record of 21 held by Celeste Cianfrani in 2000.
FORQUER NOW FOURTH IN SINGLE SEASON SAVES
Erin Forquer recorded 11 saves against Davidson and moved into fourth place on the Ohio State single season saves list. She passed Jamie Bauer (1998) and Megan Barnett (2000) with 139 each.
MIRICK SETS SEASON POINTS RECORD
With her goal in the first six seconds of the Davidson game, Megan Mirick broke the Ohio State season points record. Mirick had three goals and an assist game against the Wildcats to raise the record to 57 points (51 goals, 6 assists). The record had been held by Erin Andersen with 53 points in 1999. Mirick also holds the OSU career record for goals (141) and points (180).
OHIO STATE LEADING ALC STATISTICS
The Buckeyes have several student-athletes atop the American Lacrosse Conference overall statistics from this week. OSU’s Regina Oliver leads the conference in caused turnovers at 3.07 per game. Megan Mirick is second in goals per game at 3.64 and is second in scoring at 4.07 points per game. Goalkeeper Erin Forquer leads the conference in goals against average at 8.90 and is second in save percentage at .549. Lauren Cochran ranks third in draw controls at 2.07 per game while Shannon Wilson is fifth in ground balls with a 2.86 per game average. Tracey Bound ranks second in assists at 1.71 per game and is third in scoring with a 3.93 per game average. Ohio State ranks first in team offense with a 13.71 goals per game average and in defense with a 8,79 goals against average. OSU is first in draw controls averaging 13.43 per game and is ranked fourth in ground balls at 22.29 per game.
MIRICK BREAKS HER OWN SEASON GOAL RECORD
With her five goals at Virginia Tech, Megan Mirick raised her season goal total to 42 and broke her own OSU record for goals in a season. Mirick set the record in 1999 with 39 goals. She has raised her season goal record to 51.
BUCKEYES RANKED NO. 14 IN IWLCA POLL
Ohio State moved up two spots to No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll. The Buckeyes received 53 points this week, moving up from 16th last week. Princeton (15-1) holds No. 1 in the poll with 159 points.
BUCKEYES IN THE NCAA STATISTICS
In NCAA statistics released this week, Ohio State is third in the country in scoring offense at 13.71 goals per game. The Buckeyes are fourth in scoring margin at 4.93 and 13th in scoring defense at 8.78. Ohio State is ranked fourth in draw controls at 13.43 and is third in caused turnovers at 15.79. Individually, Megan Mirick is fifth in goals per game at 3.64 and Regina Oliver is third in caused turnovers at 3.07 per game. Tracey Bounds ranks 11th in assists per game at 1.71. Erin Forquer is 17th in the country in goals against average at 8.91 and 19th in saves percentage at .549. OSU has four players ranked in the top-26 in caused turnovers, including Oliver. The other student-athletes Trish Derwart (19th, 2.18 per game), Shannon Wilson (20th, 2.14) and Kim Lowe (tied for 26th, 2.00).
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel is in her seventh year as the head coach for Ohio State. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 53-45 at Ohio State and is 129-63 in her career.
