COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 19th-ranked Ohio State (6-1, 1-0 American Lacrosse Conference) women’s lacrosse squad suffered its first loss of the season to fifth-ranked North Carolina (6-2), 12-7. The game was played at the University of Maryland as part of the Atlantic Coast Conference-American Lacrosse Conference Challenge. In the second game of the night, seventh-ranked Maryland (6-3) defeated 11th-ranked Penn State (3-5), 13-11. Ohio State’s scoring came from Shannon Wilson (Jr., Sherkston, Ontario) and Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa) with two goals each with Tracy Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.), Carrie Weatherill (So., Malvern, Pa.) and Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) adding a goal each. North Carolina received a five goal performance from Kellie Thompson (Sr., Grasonville, Md.) with Lindsay Stone (Sr., Stony Brook, N.Y.) and Erin McInnes (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) adding three each and Laurie Milback (Jr., Northport, N.Y.) one.%^$
%^$The Tar Heels took a 2-0 lead with goals by Kellie Thompson (1:20), assisted by Laurie Milback, and Milback (2:49) on a free position attempt. Tracey Bounds put the Buckeyes on the scoreboard (7:13) with an assist from Shannon Wilson. Wilson tied the game at two at 9:01. North Carolina when ahead with a Erin McInnes Goal (9:37), assisted by Lindsey Stone. McInnes scored at 13:04 and Stone made it 5-2 at 14:15. The Buckeyes responded with goals by Regina Oliver (15:33), Wilson (20:15), assisted by Bounds, and Carrie Weatherill (23:45) to tie the score at five. UNC’s McInnes scored her third goal (29:57) of the game to five the Tar Heels a 6-5 lead at halftime.%^$
%^$Ohio State opened the second half with Oliver’s second goal (35:47) of the game to tie the score at six. North Carolina opened up the game by scoring the next six goals to take a 12-6 lead. Thompson gave the Tar Heels the lead (7-6) for good at 41:16. Stone’s goal (43:15) made it 43:15. Thompson continued the scoring with three consecutive goals. She scored on a free position attempt at 52:11. He next goal (52:51) was assisted by Gina Allen (Fr., Parkton, Md.). Her final goal (53:52) of the game was assisted by Stone. Stone closed the North Carolina scoring, 12-6, with a goal at 58:35. OSU’s Megan Mirick scored on a free position attempt at 59:11 to set the final score at 12-7.%^$
%^$In goal for North Carolina, Katelyn Hoffman (So., Ellicott City, Md.) recorded seven saves for the game with OSU’s Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Height, Ohio) having 16.%^$
%^$Ohio State continues play in the Challenge at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 31 when OSU plays host and seventh-ranked Maryland (6-3). Penn State faces North Carolina at 1 p.m. in the final game Sunday.
