COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 19th-ranked Ohio State (6-0) women’s lacrosse squad continues on the road with two matches this week. The Buckeyes face fifth ranked North Carolina (5-2) at 5 p.m., Friday, March 29 at Maryland. OSU then plays at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 31 at seventh-ranked Maryland (4-3). The matches are part of the ALC-Atlantic Coast Conference Challenge. No. 11 Penn State (3-4) faces Maryland at 7 p.m. Friday and plays North Carolina at 1 p.m. Sunday to complete the Challenge.
WEATHERILL NAMED AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Carrie Weatherill (So., Malvern, Pa./Great Valley High School) has been selected as the American Lacrosse Conference Player of the Week. Weatherill scored a game-high four goals in OSU’s 16-4 win over Northwestern to move to 5-0 overall and earning OSU’s first win in the ALC. Weatherill had her four goals in the first half as OSU built a 9-2 lead. With the score 4-2, she scored the game-winner on an assist from Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron High School) and added two more goals in a span of four minutes. She added her fourth goal on a free position to finish her scoring for the day.
BUCKEYES RANKED NO. 19 IN IWLCA POLL
Ohio State moved up one spot to No. 19 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association weekly poll. The Buckeyes received 18 points this week, moving up from 20th last week. Georgetown (6-0) continues as No. 1 in the poll with 180 points. A LOOK AT NORTH CAROLINA
The Tar Heels, coach by Jenny Slingluff Levy, are 5-2 overall and ranked fifth in the IWLCA poll. North Carolina lost at No. 6 Virginia, 11-8, last week. Lindsay Stone is the top scorer for North Carolina with 23 goals. Kellie Thompson and Christine McPike have 19 each. Erin McInnes has a team-high 11 assists. In goal, Katelyn Hoffman has started all seven matches and has 34 saves (.395) and has given up 52 goals (7.82 per game). The Tar Heels are averaging 12.7 goals per game and are giving up 7.71.
THE OHIO STATE – NORTH CAROLINA SERIES
North Carolina has won all four contests with Ohio State. UNC won 15-5 in 1998, 19-5 in 1999, 13-4 in 2000 and 18-6 in 2001. The 2000 game was at North Carolina with the other three played at neutral sites. Last year’s game was played at Penn State.
A LOOK AT MARYLAND
The Terrapins, coached by Cindy Timchal, are 4-3 overall and ranked No. 7 in the IWLCA poll. Maryland has won three straight matches including a 13-8 win over Dartmouth and a 17-9 victory over Old Dominion last week in home games. The Terrapins defeated Harvard, 18-3, at Ludwig Field on Tuesday and will face No. 11 Penn State (3-3) Friday prior to playing Ohio State. Kelly Coppedge is the top scorer for Maryland with 19 goals. Courtney Hobbs has 17 goals and Meredith Egan 11. Hobbs is the team leader in assists with nine. In goal Alexis Venechanos has started four of the six matches and has 44 saves (.473) and has given up 39 goals (11.05 goals against average). Cara Gorman has two starts and has recorded 23 saves (.575) and has given up 17 goals (11.09). Maryland is averaging 13.74 goals per game and is giving up 11.06.
THE OHIO STATE – MARYLAND SERIES
Maryland won the only meeting with Ohio State last year. The Terrapins won 19-2 in a game played at Penn State.
A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes are 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the American Lacrosse Conference. OSU defeated Northwestern, 16-4 last Saturday and Delaware, 12-11, in a match played at Notre Dame Monday. Megan Mirick is the team leader in goals with 20. Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second with 17 and Carrie Weatherill (So., Malvern, Pa.) and Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) are tied for third with 10. Bounds has a team-high nine assists with Alexia Vogler (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) and Oliver recording seven each. Bounds is the team leader in points with 26 on 17 goals and nine assists. Mirick is second with 23 on 20 goals and three assists. Oliver is third with 17 with 10 goals and seven assists. In goal, Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) has started all six games and has recorded 50 saves (.595) and has given up 34 goals (6.03 goals against average). The Buckeyes are averaging 16.33 goals per game and are giving up 5.83 per game.
NORTHWESTERN RECAP
Ohio State, playing in its first American Lacrosse Conference match, defeated Northwestern 16-4. OSU remained undefeated at 6-0 and 1-0 in the ALC while Northwestern dropped to 1-2, 0-1. Carrie Weatherill had a game-high four goals in the win over the Wildcats. Shannon Wilson added three Alexia Vogler two and Regina Oliver two. Tracey Bounds had a goal and a match-high five assists for six points. Angela McMahon had a goal and an assists to lead the Wildcats. Northwestern had a 2-1 lead before OSU score 14 consecutive goals to take a commanding 15-2 lead. In goal, Erin Forquer had eight saves in the game.
DELAWARE RECAP
Ohio State, with a goal by Tracey Bounds with 3:14 left in the game, defeated Delaware 12-11 in a game played at Notre Dame. The win made the Buckeyes 6-0 on the year and Delaware, 2-4. Bounds had a team-high four goals in the game and added two assists. Alexia Vogler had three goals and two assists with Megan Mirick collecting two goals and an assist. Corinne Shuck had a game-high six goals for Delaware with Michelle Campolettano adding three goals. OSU’s Bounds opened the scoring to give OSU a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes had an 8-2 lead at 26:34 of the first half when Delaware scored six consecutive goals to tie the game on a Campolettano goal at 40:27. Mirick’s goal gave OSU a 9-8 lead at 41:06. Two goals by Campolettano at 47:42 and 52:07 gave Delaware a 10-9 lead. OSU goals by Reginal Oliver (52:31) and Vogler (54:00) returned the lead to OSU at 11-10. Campolettano’s fourth goal of the game tied the game at 55:53 for Delaware. Bounds scored the winning goal at 56:46 to keep the Buckeyes undefeated. OSU’s Erin Forquer had nine saves in goal while Laurie Tortorelli recorded 22 saves for Delaware.
BUCKEYES OUT TO BEST START IN HISTORY
With OSU’s 6-0 start this season, it marks the best start in the seven year history of the program. The Buckeyes previous best start was last season at 5-1. OSU was 4-2 in 1996 and 2000.
L. COCHRAN MOVES TO FIFTH IN CAREER GOALS
With two goals against Northwestern and one against Delaware, Lauren Cochran has moved to fifth on the Ohio State career goals list with 72. She passed Laurie Ryback (1996-99) with 69. Cochran has nine goals and an assist on the season.
ERIN FORQUER, THE TOP GOALIE IN THE AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE
In the latest statistics release by the American Lacrosse Conference, Erin Forquer is the top goalie in the conference for all matches with a 4.97 goals against average and has a 64.1 saves percentage. Those statistics rank her first in the country in goals against average and fourth in saves percentage.
MIRICK, L. COCHRAN AND OLIVER TOP ALC STATISTICS
The Buckeyes have three other players leading statistical categories in the ALC. Megan Mirick leads the conference in goals per game at 3.60 and ranks fifth in the country. Lauren Cochran tops the league in draw controls at 2.20 per game , ranking 16th in the country and Regina Oliver has a 3.40 per game average in caused turnovers to lead the conference and rank second in the country. Also listed in the conference statistics, in points per game are Mirick and Tracey Bounds, tied for second, at 4.00 and are tied for 14th in the country. Bounds is fourth in goals at 2.60 and second in assists at 1.40 per game.
BUCKEYE HAVE TOP NATIONAL NUMBERS
Ohio State leads the country in five of six national statistical categories. The Buckeyes are first in scoring margin (12.40), scoring offense (17.2), scoring defense (4.80), draw controls (14.80), caused turnover (17.40). OSU ranks 12th in ground balls (25.8).
BUCKEYES JOIN THE AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE
Ohio State has joined with six other squads to for the American Lacrosse Conference. Members include Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Davidson, Ohio University and Ohio State. In the first year, Ohio State will face Northwestern, John Hopkins, Vanderbilt and Ohio University on the road and host Penn State and Davidson in league contests.
OHIO STATE RANKED FOURTH IN ALC PRESEASON POLL
By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State has been picked fourth in the American Lacrosse Conference Preseason Poll. The Buckeyes received 20 points. Penn State was voted first, receiving 36 points and six first place votes. John Hopkins was second with 31 points and one first place vote. Vanderbilt was third with 26 points. The remaining league members were ranked as follows: 5th Davidson (14 points), 6th Ohio University (12) and 7th Northwestern (8).
HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
Sue Stimmel is in her seventh year as the head coach for Ohio State. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 49-41 at Ohio State and is 123-59 in her career.
SCERBO AND CIANFRANI JOIN COACHING STAFF
The women’s lacrosse coaching staff has two new members this season. Michael Scerbo joins the staff after spending the last five years as the head coach of Limestone College. A 1995 graduate of SUNY-Oswego with a B.A. in biology, Scerbo had a 33-24 record at Limestone College. Former Ohio State women’s lacrosse student-athlete Celeste Cianfrani joins the coaching staff after her four-year career with the Buckeyes. She graduated with a degree in communications in the Spring of 2001. Cianfrani is Ohio State’s all-time leader in assists (51) and is second in goals (87) and career points (138). She was a 2001 Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American.
READE AND TULK GAIN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Two Ohio State student-athletes gained international experience last year as they played for Team Canada in the IFWLA 2001 World Cup in England. Kylee Reade and Amy Tulk (So., West Chester, Pa.) gained valuable experience as Team Canada finished fourth in the World Cup.
UPCOMING FOR OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes conclude four weeks on the road with a 11 a.m., Saturday, April 6 game at John Hopkins. OSU returns home for a 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 9 game against Notre Dame.
