COLUMBUS, Ohio – The NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Committee announced the 12 teams who have been selected to participate in the 2002 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships that will be held April 4-6 in Norman, Okla.
No. 1 Ohio State, the defending NCAA champion, qualified for the championships for a record 22nd consecutive season. The squad earned its spot in the field by winning the Big Ten Championship and earning the conference’s automatic bid.
The other automatic qualifiers are Oklahoma, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation champion, and Temple, the Eastern College Athletic Conference winner. The other competitors include the top nine teams based on their national qualifications average, the top 12 all-around competitors who are not members of a selected team and the top 12 individuals per event who are not members of a selected team or have not already been selected in the all-around.
Teams and individuals are selected for the national qualifiers based on the national qualifications average formula. The NQA is computed as follows: select the three highest scores, counting no more than one home meet. Replace the highest of these three scores with the conference championship meet score and average these three scores. Individuals who compete in a final at their conference meet may use the finals score as a regular-season home or away meet. Ohio State enters the meet as the No. 1 ranked team based on the NQA.
The two national qualifying sessions will be held April 4. The top three teams from each session will advance to the team and all-around finals, which will be held at 8 p.m. (EST) April 5. The individual event finals will be at 8 p.m. April 6. All competitions will take place in the Lloyd Noble Center on the campus of the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
