Women’s Gymnastics Places Fourth at Big Ten Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team took fourth place Saturday at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by OSU in front of 1,678 fans in St. John Arena. The Buckeyes scored 194.725, falling short of champion Michigan, which scored 196.425 to claim its fourth straight Big Ten crown. Minnesota (195.775) and Iowa (195.55) took second and third, respectively.
Ohio State posted its strongest event score on balance beam, led by Sheri Greig (Jr., Newark, Ohio/Olympic Academy of Gym.), who scored a career-high 9.9 to tie for third-place honors. OSU scored 48.85 on the event – its second-best beam score of the season. OSU did not count a fall on any event all night.
Mary Beth Doerr (Sr., Boston Heights, Ohio/Flytz Gymnastics) tied for sixth place on uneven bars with a 9.825, and Amanda Allen (Sr., Birmingham, Mich./Oakland Gymnastics) scored 9.85 on floor to tie for sixth place. The two join Greig as the Buckeyes on the All-Big Ten team. The top six finishers in each event and the top three in the all-around earned All-Big Ten honors.
In the league awards, Minnesota co-head coaches Jim and Meg Stephenson took Coach of the Year honors, while the Gophers’ MaryAnne Kelley nabbed Gymnast of the Year laurels. Illinois’ Ashley Williams earned Freshman of the Year honors.
Penn State’s Katie Rowland was the big winner of the night, taking the all-around (39.5) and vault (9.95) crowns. Minnesota’s Annie Laatsch captured the uneven bars title (9.95), while Elise Ray of Michigan won balance beam (9.95). Iowa’s Alexis Maday won her second straight floor exercise crown with a 9.925. Ohio State now will await its postseason fate, which will be announced Monday.
