%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The Ohio State (3-0) women’s lacrosse squad begins four weeks of road trips with a 3:30 p.m., Saturday, March 16 game against Boston University (1-1). The game will be played at Lions Field on the campus of the College of New Jersey. It will be played as part of a doubleheader with The College of New Jersey hosting Salisbury University at 1 p.m.%^$
%^$A LOOK AT BOSTON UNIVERSITY
%^$The Bonnies, coached by Liza Shoemaker, are 1-1 on the season. Boston lost 17-10 last week to No. 3 North Carolina. Ericka Hergenroeder is the team leader in goals (6) and points (10). Kristin Abruzzese and Alyssa Trudel have five goals each. Abruzzese has nine points and Trudel seven. Both Hergenroeder and Abruzzese had recorded a team-high four assists. In goal, Brooke Barrett has started both games and has recorded 21 saves. Hergenroeder had four goals and an assist in the loss to North Carolina.%^$
%^$THE OHIO STATE – BOSTON UNIVERSITY SERIES
%^$Boston University has won all three games with Ohio State. Last season in Philadelphia, Pa., Boston won 14-6. In previous meetings, Boston won 11-8 in 2000 in a game played at Temple University. The first meeting was in 1999, an 11-6 Boston win that was played in Boyertown, Pa.%^$
%^$A LOOK AT OHIO STATE
%^$The Buckeyes remained undefeated with wins over St. Bonaventure (18-1) and Monmouth (18-7). Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) is the team leader in goals with 12. Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) is second with eight. Alexia Vogler (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) has a team-high five assists. Mirick is the team’s point leader with 13 with 12 goals and one assist. Bounds is second with 10 points on eight goals and two assists. Regina Oliver (Fr., Pottstown, Pa.) is third with eight on five goals and three assists. In goal, Erin Forquer (Fr., Shaker Heights, Ohio) has started all three games and has recorded 20 saves. The Buckeyes are averaging 18 goals per game and are giving up just over four per game.%^$
%^$ST. BONAVENTURE RECAP
%^$The Ohio State women’s lacrosse squad defeated St. Bonaventure 18-1 Saturday afternoon in a game played in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Most of the game was played in driving rain and strong winds. OSU’s Noemi Hites (So., Pleasanton, Calif.) tallied four points to lead all scorers with three goals and an assists. Lauren Cochran (Sr., Coatesville, Pa.) added three goals for the Buckeyes while Tracey Bounds (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.), Caroline Weatherill (So., Malvern, Pa.), Megan Mirick (Sr., Burke, Va.) and Amy Tulk (So., West Chester, Pa.) had two goals each. St. Bonaventure’s lone goal was scored by Emily Lilyea (Jr., Penn Yan, N.Y.).%^$
%^$MONMOUTH RECAP
%^$Megan Mirick scored six goals and added an assist in an 18-7 victory over Monmouth. Tracy Bounds and Amy Tulk added three goals and Shannon Wilson, two as OSU went to 3-0. Monmouth’s Beka Murphy scored a team-high four goals with Stacy Sydio adding two goals and Steph LaGrossa one. Ohio State built up a 7-0 lead and held a 10-3 lead at halftime. Monmouth kept pace in the second half and trailed 13-6 before the Buckeyes scored five consecutive goals to open up an 18-6 lead. Monmouth’s Murphy added her fourth goal to close out the scoring at 18-7. OSU’s Erin Forquer had six saves in the game while Monmouth’s Stacy Makria had eight. Mirick’s six goals raises her career total to 102 and her seven points gives her 136 points moving her to second on the OSU career list.%^$
%^$MIRICK HAS OUTSTANDING WEEKEND
%^$With two goals against St. Bonaventure and a record-tying six goals in the Monmouth game, Megan Mirick now has 102 career goals. Her six-goal performance against the Hawks ties the Ohio State single game goal record for the fifth time. Mirick has two of the five record performances, he second against Denver in 1999. Others who have tied the record include Shannon Wilson at Denver in 2000, Erin Andersen vs. Denver in 1999 and Mara Simpson at Duquesne in 1997.%^$
%^$MIRICK NOW SECOND IN CAREER POINTS
%^$With her seven points against Monmouth, Megan Mirick now has 136 career points on 102 goals and 34 assists. She has passed Mara Simpson (1996-99) with 134 points and is now second in career points for Ohio State. Mirick need three points to become OSU’s all-time points leader. The position is currently held by assistant coach Celeste Cianfrani (1998-00) who has 138 points.%^$
%^$BUCKEYES JOIN THE AMERICAN LACROSSE CONFERENCE
%^$Ohio State has joined with six other squads to for the American Lacrosse Conference. Members include Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Davidson, Ohio University and Ohio State. In the first year, Ohio State will face Northwestern, John Hopkins, Vanderbilt and Ohio University on the road and host Penn State and Davidson in league contests.%^$
%^$OHIO STATE RANKED FOURTH IN ALC PRESEASON POLL
%^$By a vote of the conference coaches, Ohio State has been picked fourth in the American Lacrosse Conference Preseason Poll. The Buckeyes received 20 points. Penn State was voted first, receiving 36 points and six first place votes. John Hopkins was second with 31 points and one first place vote. Vanderbilt was third with 26 points. The remaining league members were ranked as follows: 5th Davidson (14 points), 6th Ohio University (12) and 7th Northwestern (8).%^$
%^$HEAD COACH SUE STIMMEL
%^$Sue Stimmel is in her seventh year as the head coach for Ohio State. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel is the only coach that the Buckeye program has had. She spent six years has the head coach of Denison prior to coming to Ohio State. Stimmel is 46-41 at Ohio State and is 120-59 in her career.%^$
%^$SCERBO AND CIANFRANI JOIN COACHING STAFF
%^$The women’s lacrosse coaching staff has two new members this season. Michael Scerbo joins the staff after spending the last five years as the head coach of Limestone College. A 1995 graduate of SUNY-Oswego with a B.A. in biology, Scerbo had a 33-24 record at Limestone College. Former Ohio State women’s lacrosse student-athlete Celeste Cianfrani joins the coaching staff after her four-year career with the Buckeyes. She graduated with a degree in communications in the Spring of 2001. Cianfrani is Ohio State’s all-time leader in career points (138) and assists (51) and is second in goals (87). She was a 2001 Mid-Atlantic Regional All-American.%^$
%^$BLANTON JOINS SQUAD FROM FIELD HOCKEY
%^$After playing the last three seasons with the field hockey team, Allison Blanton (Sr., Newton, N.J.) has joined the women’s lacrosse team for the 2002 season. She helped the Buckeye field hockey team earn a share of the Big Ten Championship and won the Big Ten Tournament. An all-Big Ten selection, Blanton was the co-MVP of the Big Ten Tournament and was a West Region second team selection of the NFHCA. She joined the lacrosse team with the departure of Megan Barnett due to injury.%^$
%^$READE AND TULK GAIN INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE
%^$Two Ohio State student-athletes gained international experience last year as they played for Team Canada in the IFWLA 2001 World Cup in England. Kylee Reade and Amy Tulk (So., West Chester, Pa.) gained valuable experience as Team Canada finished fourth in the World Cup.%^$
%^$ACADEMIC HONORS FROM LAST SEASON
%^$A former and a current player were honored last season as Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association Division I academic selections. Former standout and now OSU assistant coach Celeste Cianfrani and Trisha Miller were two of the 184 collegiate women’s lacrosse players honored last season.%^$
%^$NEXT FOR THE BUCKEYES
%^$For the second of four weeks of road games, the Buckeyes will play a 1 p.m., Saturday, March 23 game at Northwestern and then face Delaware at 1 p.m. Monday, March 25 in a game played at Notre Dame. The following week, OSU will face North Carolina at 5 p..m, Friday, March 29 in a game played at Maryland. The Buckeyes will then face Maryland at 11 a.m., Sunday, March 31.%^$
