Men’s Hockey Loses Regular-Season Finale to Miami, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

OXFORD, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated in its last regular season game of the year by the Miami RedHawks, 3-1. The Buckeyes scored first but Miami scored three unanswered, including two in the second period, to pull out the win on its senior night in Goggin Ice Arena.
Ohio State’s record falls to 17-15-4 overall and 12-12-4 in CCHA play. Miami ends its seven-game losing streak and improves to 12-20-2 overall, 9-17-2 in the league. The Buckeyes remain in seventh place in the league and will travel for the first round of the playoffs, although the opponent has yet to be determined. It was the Buckeyes’ seventh consecutive loss on the road.
There was no scoring in the first meeting until 17:14, when JB Bittner put the rebound of a Paul Caponigri shot into the net with the Buckeyes’ killing a penalty for the squad’s fourth shorthanded goal of the season and the first of his career. Scott Titus also assisted on the goal, as he led Caponigri with the breakout pass. The Buckeyes outshot Miami, 12-7, in the period and killed off all three Miami power-play chances.
Miami scored two goals in the second period to end the stanza up, 2-1. Jason Deskins talied on the power play 2:33 into the period to tie the game at one. Matt Chandler gave Miami its first lead of the game with an unassisted goal at the 17:47 mark. The Buckeyes put four shots on net in the stanza, while Miami had 11.
The teams were scoreless in the third period until Miami sealed the win with an empty net goal by Derek Edwardson with 17 seconds remaining. Ohio State was outshot in the periode, 8-5.
For the game, the RedHawks outshot Ohio State, 26-21. The Buckeyes were scoreless on the power play in the game.
Following OSU’s loss, Bowling Green wins the 2002 Ohio Cup. OSU, Miami and BGSU all were 2-2 in Ohio Cup play this season. The Falcons clinch the award based on the tiebreaker of goal differential in Ohio Cup games.
