No. 22 Buckeyes Fall in Third Overtime to No. 13 UNC, 13-12 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team just fell short in its season opener, losing on the road to North Carolina in three overtimes, 13-12. Goalie Tony Russo (So. Fallston, Md./Calvert Hall) had a standout game for the Buckeyes, posting 20 saves, while Curtis Smith (Jr., Victoria, British Columbia/Oak Bay) led the squad with four goals and an assist.
UNC sophomore midfield Johnny Seivold scored with 2:33 left in the third overtime period to give the Tar Heels the win after 69 minutes and 27 seconds of play.
In the game, there were nine ties and four lead changes. The Buckeyes’ extra-man offense was efficient, scoring four goals on four opportunities. The Buckeyes were outshot, 63-31, in the game. Russo made 20 saves while allowing 13 goals, while UNC goalie Paul Spellman had 15 saves and allowed 12 goals.
The Buckeyes ended the first half up, 7-6. After UNC opened the game with two straight goals, the Buckeyes responded with three consecutive tallies, scored by Pat Myers (Jr., Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk), Mike Norton (Jr., Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall) and Tom Randisi (Fr., Towson, Md./Calvert Hall). The teams traded goals after that, with Pat Donohue (Jr., West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) scoring for OSU, and the Buckeyes then went up, 7-4, with a string of goals by Randisi, Smith and Myers. UNC’s Andrew Lucas tallied twice to end the half, including a goal with 42 seconds remaining, to bring the Tar Heels within one. UNC outshot Ohio State, 33-12, in the half.
In the second half, neither team could put together more than a one-goal lead. The score was tied at eight at the end of three quarters, as UNC’s Bryan Will and Austin Garrison scored around a Smith goal. In the fourth quarter, UNC took a 10-9 lead, its first lead since late in the first quarter, on back-to-back goals by Tim Gosier. The Buckeyes’ Anthony Gilardi (So., Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Smith scored to give Ohio State the lead, 11-10. UNC’s Lucas then tallied his third goal of the game at 5:31 to tie the game at 11.
The Buckeyes took the lead with 2:06 remaining on another Smith goal. However, Gosier scored his third goal of the fourth quarter with 1:31 left to tie the game at 12. There was no scoring until Seivold’s goal in the third overtime.
For the game, Smith led the Buckeyes with five points, on four goals and an assist. Myers had two goals and two assists and Gilardi had two goals and one helper. Randisi tallied twice in his first collegiate game. Norton and Donohue also scored in the game and Mark Marion (Sr., South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), Nick Miceli (Jr., Monkton, Md./Loyola), Bryan Mulford (Jr., Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) and Mark Engel (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) all had one assist.
Ohio State returns to action at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23 when it travels to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown.
