Volleyball Downs Michigan State, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (13-10 overall, 7-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team reached .500 in Big Ten play with a 3-1 (30-25, 29-31, 30-17, 30-18) victory over Michigan State (15-9, 7-7) Saturday night in St. John Arena in front of 1,128 fans. The Buckeyes who began league action with five straight losses have rebounded with wins in seven of the last nine matches. Leading the way for OSU was Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) with a match-high 21 kills and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) with a career-high 13 kills. Michigan State’s Kyla Smith (Sr., Commox, B.C.) had a team-high 13 kills for the Spartans with Jenny Rood (Jr., Ada, Mich.) adding 12.
With game one tied at five-all, two ace serves by Gordon and blocks by Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Andersson and Higgins gave OSU a 9-5 lead. A Rood kill cut it to 9-6. Kills by Andersson and Stiling and an ace serve by Higgins opened a 12-6 OSU lead. A Smith kill and a Spartan error made it 13-7. A Buckeye error and a Nikki Colson kill closed the lead to 13-9. Stiling’s kill followed by a Buckeye error made it 14-10. OSU kills from Stiling and Higgins and MSU’s Morley and Megan Wallin (So., Sarasota, Fla.) advanced the score to 16-12. Two OSU errors and a Wallin kill cut the lead to one at 16-15. Two Spartan errors made it 18-15 but a Rood kill cut it to 18-16. A Michigan State error and a Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) kill took the lead to four at 20-16. A Smith kill and an OSU error made it 20-18. Kills by Andersson and Draeger made it 22-18. An OSU error and an Andersson kill made it 23-19. A Kim Schram (So., London, Ontario) kill and a Spartan error made it 24-20. A MSU block by Rood and Morley followed by a Gordon kill made it 25-21 as Michigan State called time out. Buckeye kills by Higgins and Gordon with a Spartan kill by Rood made it 27-22 as Michigan State called time out. A Spartan error made it 28-22 but a Wallin kill cut the margin to five at 28-23. Andersson countered with a kill to set game point at 29-23. Michigan State, with a kill from Smith and an OSU error stopped two game points at 29-25 before a Higgins kill ended the game at 30-25 for Ohio State. Ohio State hit .244 for the game to .235 for Michigan State.
Michigan State broke a four-all tie with two Schram kills and a block by Colson and Smith to open a 7-4 lead. At 11-7, kills by Gordon and Higgins and a MSU error made it 11-10. With the Spartans leading 17-16, two kills by Rood, a Buckeye error and a solo block by Rood opened up a 21-16 MSU lead. Trailing 25-20, Ohio State scored the next five points with a Spartan error, two Andersson kills, an ace by Draeger and a Stiling-Andersson block to tie the game at 25. An Angela Morley (Sr., Holland, Mich.) kill, an OSU error and a block by Rood made it 28-25. A Gordon kill, a Spartan error and a Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.)-Stiling block tied the game at 28. A Nikki Colson (Jr., Lincoln, Neb.) kill set game point for Michigan State at 29-28. Gordon countered with a kill at 29-29. Rood responded with a kill to set game point two at 30-29. Smith’s kill ended the game at 31-29 and tied the match at one game each. The Spartans hit .227 for the game to .191 for OSU.
The Buckeyes came out on fire in game three taking a 6-0 lead. The run began with a Gordon kill, an ace serve by Stiling and a block by Virtue, Higgins and Gordon. A Michigan State error and kills by Gordon and Higgins completed the run. The Spartans scored with a block by Rood and Wallin (6-1). OSU expanded the lead to 10-1 with a Spartan error, a Gordon kill, an ace serve from Virtue and another MSU error. Michigan State, with a Schram kill and a block by Morley cut the margin to seven at 10-3. Two Spartan errors, a Gordon ace and an Andersson kill made it 14-3. The Buckeyes maintained the lead and won the game with a Stiling kill at 30-17. Ohio State hit .188 for the game to -.034 for the Spartans.
Two Spartan errors broke a two-all tie to open a 4-2 Ohio State lead. At 6-4, a Spartan error and a Gordon kill moved the score to 8-4. At 9-5, a MSU error and an ace serve by Draeger made it 11-5. At 15-9, a Gordon kill and a Spartan error made the lead eight at 17-9. A Smith kill and a block by Schram and Morley cut the margin to 17-11. Kills by Gordon and Andersson and a Spartan error made the score 20-11. Kills by Schram and Morley and a Spartan error moved the score to 21-13. At 23-15, a Wallin kill and a Rood block cut the lead to six at 23-17 as Ohio State called time out. Gordon’s kill and an ace serve by Stiling made it 25-17, OSU. Smith countered with a kill at 25-18. Draeger’s kill and three MSU errors set match point at 29-18. Gordon’s 21st kill of the match ended the game at 30-18 giving Ohio State a 3-1 win over Michigan State. The Buckeyes hit .313 for the game to .185 for the Spartans.
Ohio State hit .230 for the match to .164 for Michigan State. OSU had a 63-51 advantage in kills and had a 12-1 margin in ace serves. The Spartans gave up 11 service errors to six for OSU. Michigan State had a 47-46 advantage in digs with Emmy Miller (Jr., Okemos, Mich.) recording a match-high 12 digs. OSU’s Gordon and Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) collected a team-high 11 digs each. The Spartans had a 14.5-11 advantage at the net in blocks. OSU’s Higgins (seven assists) and MSU’s Rood (three solos, four assists) shared match-high honors with seven blocks each. OSU’s Virtue recorded a match-high 48 assists to 42 for MSU’s Colson.
Ohio State continues a four-match home stand next week with contests against Indiana (18-8, 8-6) Wed., Nov. 13 and No. 14 Penn State (20-5, 10-4) Fri., Nov. 15 in St. John Arena at 7 p.m.
OHIO STATE NOTES:
After starting the conference season 0-5, Ohio State has won seven of the last nine matches to reach .500 at 7-7.
Ohio State’s 12 ace serves is a season high. Against Colorado in Hawaii, OSU recorded 11 aces.
Anna Andersson had a career-high 13 kills against Michigan State. Her previous best was nine against Minnesota.
Stephanie Higgins recorded seven assist blocks against Michigan State to tie her career-high for the fourth time. She last recorded seven assists against Iowa.
Stacey Gordon had 21 kills and 11 digs against Michigan State. She has extended her consecutive streak of double-figure kill matches to 39 and has recorded double-figure kill in 52 of 54 career matches. In her career, she has had 25 matches with 20 or more kills and four the 30 or more. Defensively, Gordon has had 17 matches with double-figure digs this season and 36 in her career. She has had 35 career double-doubles (kills-digs).
Two aces by Shelly Draeger against the Spartans raises her career total to 138 and moves her into a fifth place tie in OSU career records. She is tied with Marlene O’Brien (1983-86). Draeger passed No. 6 Jenny Jackson (1992-95) with 137.
Shelly Draeger had three assist blocks against MSU to raise her career total to 188 and move to 16th on the OSU career list. She passed Laura Davis (1991-94) with 187.
Suzie Stiling added four assist blocks to her career total blocks total of 413 (60 solos, 353 assists). Stiling has moved into a tie for third place on the OSU career total blocks list with Dana Stearns (1997-00). Stearns has 33 solo and 380 assists.
