Volleyball Defeats Michigan, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (12-10 overall, 6-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind match-highs of 32 kills and 15 kills by Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) defeated Michigan (14-9, 8-5) 3-1 (28-30, 30-20, 30-20, 30-28) Friday night in front of 1,378 fans in St. John Arena. Buckeye teammates Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Suzie Stiling (Glenview, Ill.) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Michigan’s Katrina Lehman (Sr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Nicole Poquette (Sr., Grand Haven, Mich.) had a team-high 10 kills each with Lisa Gamalski (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) adding nine.
From a 10-all tied in game one, Michigan with a Jennifer Gandolph (So., Greenwood, Ind.) kill, a block by Gamalski and Erin Moore (Jr., Tiffin, Ohio) and three OSU errors took a 15-10 lead. With Michigan leading, 25-23, a Gordon kill and an ace serve by Katie Virtue (Sr., Charles, Ill.) tied the game at 25. A Michigan error and a Gordon kill gave OSU a 27-25 lead as Michigan called time out. Each team had an error to move the score to 28-26. Kills by Lehman and Chantel Reedus (Jr., Woodridge, Ill.) tied the game at 28. A Buckeye error followed by a Reedus kill gave Michigan a 30-28 game one win. Michigan hit .222 for the game to .316 for OSU. Buckeye Gordon had 10 kills in the game with her eighth giving her 1,000 for her career.
Ohio State started game two with a 4-0 run with two Gordon kills, a Michigan error and an ace serve by Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden). A Gandolph kill stopped the run. A Gordon kill, a Michigan error and a Stiling ace made it 7-1. Kills by Lehman and Poquette made it 7-3. A Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) kill made it 8-3. The Wolverines scored the next five points to tie the game at eight. Michigan kills by Poquette and Lehman, two OSU errors and a Lehman, Reedus and Poquette block made it eight-all. A Higgins kill and a Poquette, Reedus and Lehman block tied the game at nine. A Draeger kill, a block by Maria Pongonis (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Stiling and two Michigan errors gave OSU a 13-9 lead. A Moore kill stopped the run at 13-10 but two Draeger kills and an UM error made it 16-10. The Buckeyes maintained the lead and finished off the game with a Gordon kill for a 30-20 game two win to tie the match at one game each. Ohio State hit .216 for the game to .026 for Michigan. Tied a nine-all in game three, kills by Gordon and Virtue gave Ohio State an 11-9 lead. Moore’s kill made it 11-10. Two Gordon kills made it 13-10. A Lehman kill and an OSU error made it 13-12. A Gordon kill and a UM block by Lehman, Gandolph and Poquette made it 14-13. A Buckeye error tied the game at 14. Buckeye blocks by Higgins and Draeger and Draeger and Stiling made it 16-14, OSU. A Buckeye error and a Stiling kill made it 17-15. A Gamalski kill cut the margin to 17-16. A kill from Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) and a Michigan error made it 19-16. Gamalski countered with a kill at 19-17. Stiling and Moore exchange kills to move the score to 20-18. A Gordon kill and a Michigan error made it 22-18. Gandolph and Gordon had kills to move the score to 23-19. Each team recorded an error to move the score to 23-20. Kills by Miller and Gordon made it 26-20, Ohio State as Michigan called time out. A Draeger kill and a block by Stiling and Draeger made it 28-20. An ace serve by Higgins set game point at 29-20 and Draeger’s kill ended the game at 30-20. The Buckeyes hit .359 for the game to .086 for Michigan. OSU’s Gordon produced another 10-kill game for the Buckeyes.
Tied at three in game four, Michigan took a 6-3 lead with blocks by Reedus and Moore and Moore and Poquette and an OSU error. A Stiling kill and a Michigan error made it 6-5. After a Buckeye error made it 7-5, a Virtue kill and two Wolverine errors gave Ohio State an 8-7 lead. A Buckeye error tied the game at eight. Kills by Gordon and Draeger made it 10-8, OSU. Kills by Gamalski and Miller made it 11-9. Kills by Miller and Lehman made it 12-10. A Stiling kill and a Buckeye error moved the score to 13-11. Michigan closed to 13-12 with a Lehman solo block. Kills by Stiling and Poquette made it 14-13. A Michigan error and a Poquette kill made it 15-14. Kills by Virtue and Gordon and a UM error made it 18-14, OSU. Moore, Gandolph and Gamalski responded with kills to cut the lead to 18-17. Gordon’s kill made it 19-17. A Buckeye error made it 19-18. A Gordon kill made it 20-18. A Lehman kill and an OSU error tied the game at 20. Ohio State took a 23-20 lead with kills by Draeger and Miller and a Wolverine error as Michigan called time out. Lehman’s kill stopped the run at 23-21. Three Buckeye points from a Miller kill, an Andersson ace serve and a Michigan error made the OSU lead, 26-21. Gamalski and Gordon exchanged kills moving the score to 27-22. Michigan, with a Reedus kill and a Gamalski-Moore block closed the lead to 27-24 as Ohio State called time out. A Gamalski kill and an OSU error cut the lead to one at 27-26. A Gordon kill and a Michigan error set match point for Ohio State at 29-26. Michigan countered with a Reedus kill (29-27) and closed to within one at 29-28 on an OSU error. Gordon’s 32nd kill of the match ended the game at 30-28 giving the Buckeyes a 3-1 win over the Wolverines. Michigan out hit Ohio State in the game, .265 to .225.
Ohio State hit .279 for the match to .146 for Michigan. The Buckeyes had a 72-50-kill advantage in the match. OSU had a 5-1 margin in ace serves with Andersson recording a match-high two aces. The Buckeyes gave up 13 service errors to six for Michigan. Ohio State had a 54-39 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high 15 with UM’s Gandolph collecting a team-high 11. The Wolverines out blocked Ohio State, 11-10. OSU’s Stiling had a match-high seven blocks with one solo and six assists. Lehman had a team-high six blocks (1-5) for Michigan. OSU’s Virtue had a match-high 64 assists with UM’s Gamalski recording 36.
Ohio State continues at home Saturday by hosting Michigan State (15-8, 7-6) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena. The Spartans lost 0-3 (27-30, 26-30, 26-30) at Indiana (17-8, 7-6) Friday night.
OHIO STATE NOTES:
Stacey Gordon’s eighth kill in game one was her 1,000th of her career. She now has 1,024 and become the 15th Buckeye to reach 1,000 or more kills. She is the first sophomore to do so. Her 32 kills against Michigan is her 38th consecutive double-figure kill match. She has had double-figure kills in 51 of 53 career matches. It was her 24th match with 20 or more kills. It was her fourth match with 30 or more kills.
Stacey Gordon’s 15 digs was her16th match this season with double-figure digs and her 35 of her career. She has had 34 matches with double-figure digs and kills in her career.
Katie Virtue equaled her season-high of four kills for the third time. She also equaled her season high of 64 assists for the fourth time.
Suzie Stiling equaled her season-high of six assist blocks against Michigan for the third time. She also equaled her season-high of seven total blocks (1-6) for the second time.
