Columbus, Ohio – The No. 2-seeded Michigan State (19-2-0, 6-1-0 Big Ten) shutout the No. 7-seeded Indiana Hoosiers (6-13-0, 1-6-0 Big Ten) in the first game of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament at OSU Turf Field in Columbus, Ohio.
Michigan State scored two early goals to take the lead and never looked back. Julia Adams scored the first goal off an assist from Sophie Rosmalen 51 seconds into the game. MSU’s Jessica Miller scored the second Spartan goal at 1:54 off a Judi van Haeringen assist. Annebet Beerman recorded the third MSU goal with six minutes left in the first half. Beerman was assisted by Jenny Sanders and Julie Adams.
The second half of the game was scoreless.
Indiana goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek tallied 10 saves in all 70 minutes of play. Michigan State’s Christina Kirkaldy has played in every game and has only two losses on the season.
Michigan State advances and takes on the winner of the No. 3 Penn State vs. No. 6 Northwestern game (which will take place at 2 p.m. today) at 2 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Turf Field.
