Volleyball Edges Past Purdue, 3-2, For Eighth Consecutive Win – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 20th-ranked Ohio State (19-10 overall, 13-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team was forced to go the distance with Purdue (12-21, 2-18) Saturday night in a two hour, five-game shootout that saw the Buckeyes come away with a 3-2 (27-30, 30-20, 30-23, 23-30, 15-13) victory. OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) contributed a match-high 34 kills in the win with Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) adding 14. Buckeye Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) had 66 assists and became OSU’s career leader in assists with 5,546. Purdue had four players reach double-figure kills the Joanna Lowry (Jr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) scoring a team-high 14 and Kim McConaha (So., Centerville, Ind.) adding 12. Tiffany Yoskey (Sr., Canal Fulton, Ohio) and Marie Franke (Fr., Ballwin, Mo.) contributed 10 kills each.
With game one tied at six, a Franke kill, a Lowry ace serve and a Yoskey kill gave Purdue a 9-6 lead. Leading by four at 19-15, Purdue saw OSU with an Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) kill; two from Gordon and an Andersson ace serve tied the game at 19. Tied at 27, kills by Franke and Renata Dargan (Fr., New Lenox, Ill.) and an OSU error ended the game at 30-27 for Purdue. The Boilermakers hit .235 for the game to .188 for Ohio State.
Tied at one-all in game two, OSU blocks by Virtue and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Higgins and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) made it 3-1, OSU. A Buckeye error made it 3-2. A Gordon kill and an ace by Gordon made it 5-2. McConaha countered with a kill at 5-3. A Purdue error, an ace serve by Maria Pongonis (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and three Purdue errors opened a 10-3 Buckeye lead. Ohio State maintained the lead and with the score 28-20, a Stiling kill and a Virtue, Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.), Stiling block ended the game at 30-20, OSU, tying the match at a game apiece. Ohio State hit .241 for the game to -.083 for Purdue.
Purdue opened game three with a McConaha solo block, and OSU error and an ace serve by Jen Bova (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) to take a 3-0 lead. A Gordon kill and an OSU error made it 4-1. A five-point Buckeye run gave OSU a 6-4 lead. The run contained a Purdue error, a Higgins-Gordon block, a Gordon kill, another Higgins-Gordon block and another Gordon kill. A Lowry kill and an OSU error tied the game at six. The Buckeyes scored the next six points starting with a Gordon kill. Gordon then served an ace and with an Andersson kill and another Gordon ace and two Purdue errors opened a 12-6 Ohio State lead. A Lowry kill stopped the run but a Higgins kill, a Stiling-Andersson block and a Gordon kill made it 15-7. Two OSU errors and an ace serve by Lowry cut the margin to 15-10. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a Gordon kill had game point at 29-21. A McConaha kill made it 29-22 and an OSU error cut the margin to 29-23. Gordon’s 24th kill of the match closed the game at 30-23, OSU; give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead in the match. Ohio State hit .270 for the game to .057 for Purdue.
Purdue opened game four with a 6-0 lead off Ohio State errors and a solo block by Renata and a McConaha-Renata block. Purdue held a six-point lead at 20-14 before OSU scored five points to cut the margin to 20-19. The run started with a two Gordon kills. A Gordon-Stiling block was followed by another Gordon kill and a Purdue error completed the run. A McConaha kill made it 21-19. OSU cut the lead to 21-20 with a Stiling kill. A Purdue error tied the game at 21. A Buckeye error gave Purdue a 22-21 lead. Higgins tied the game at 22 with a kill. With two kills from Lowry, an OSU error and a Yoskey-Bova block, Purdue took a 26-22 lead. A Higgins kill cut the lead to 26-23. A Buckeye error made it 27-23. A kill by Franke made it 28-23 and two OSU errors ended the game at 30-23 for Purdue, tying the match at two games each. Purdue hit .188 for the game to OSU’s .043.
Game five began with a Franke ace serve for a 1-0 Purdue lead. A Boilermaker error tied the game at one. Kills by Andersson and McConaha made it 2-2. Kills by Stiling and Dargan made it three-all. Gordon and Bova advanced the score to four-all with kills. An OSU error and a Franke-Yoskey block gave Purdue a 6-4 lead. Gordon responded with a kill but an OSU error made it 7-5, Purdue as Ohio State called time out. Purdue took an 8-5 lead with a Yoskey ace serve. Kills by Draeger and McConaha made it 9-6. Andersson and McConaha kills made it 10-7. A Stiling kill and a Purdue error cut the lead to 10-9 as Purdue called time out. Stiling’s kill tied the game at 10 and a Purdue error gave Ohio State an 11-10 lead as Purdue called time out. An Andersson-Stiling block made it 12-10. Virtue and Stiling combined for a block at 13-10. A Buckeye error made it 13-11. A Purdue service error set match point at 14-11. OSU’s service error made it 14-12. A Bova solo block stopped OSU’s third match point at 14-13. The fourth match point was a Gordon kill for the game at 15-13 and the 3-2 victory in the match. OSU hit .412 for the game to .067 for Purdue.
Ohio State hit .197 for the match to Purdue’s .114. The Buckeyes had a 72-51 kill advantage and had a 6-5 margin in ace serves. OSU’s Gordon recorded a match-high three aces. Defensively, the Buckeyes enjoyed an 84-46 advantage in digs. OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) recorded a match and career-high 16 digs. At the net, OSU had a 15.5 to 14 margin in team blocks. Purdue’s McConaha had a match-high eight blocks with a solo and seven assists. OSU’s Virtue collected a match-high 66 assists in the match to 38 for Dargan.
Ohio State will learn at 9 p.m. ET, Sunday, Dec. 1 who it will face in the NCAA Tournament when the NCAA Volleyball Committee announces the bracket.

Ohio State ends the regular season with an eight-match winning streak and has won 13 of the last 15 Big Ten matches after starting league play 0-5. The eight-match streak includes 3-0 wins over No. 13 Penn State at home and No. 6 Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Ohio State recorded team-highs tonight of 84 digs, 29 assist blocks and 15.5 total blocks.
Stacey Gordon had a match-high 34 kills against Purdue. She had had double-figure kills in her last 45 matches and in 58 of 60 career matches. Gordon has had 29 matches with 20 or more kills in her career. This was the fourth time this season she has had 30 or more kills in a match. Her 15 digs in the match marked her 21st double-figure dig match this season
The 66 assists by Katie Virtue raises her career total 5,546, making her Ohio State’s all-time career assist leader. She passed Laura Davis (1991-94) who previously held the record with 5,483 assists.
With seven assist blocks in the match, Suzie Stiling now has 385 career assist blocks and has moved to second on the OSU career list. She passed Dana Stearns (1997-00) with 380.
Suzie Stiling recorded 14 kills in the match and now has 1,345 career kills and has moved to seventh on the OSU career list. She moved past Dana Stearns (1997-00) at 1,331.
Katie Virtue equaled her season-high of six assist blocks against Purdue and now has 223 career assist blocks. She has moved to 12th on the OSU career list passing Kristi Neuman (1983-86) with 222. In total blocks, Virtue now has 240 (17-223) and is now 13th on the OSU career list. She passed Holly O’Leary (1987-90) with 237 (45-192).
Shelly Draeger recorded two assist blocks against Purdue and has raised her career total blocks to 215 (13-202). She has moved to 16th on the OSU career list passing Jenny Collins (1982-85) with 214 (84-130).
Rebecca Kastein recorded a career-high 16 digs in the match against Purdue. She previously had 14 kills in three matches this season. Kastein has recorded double-figure digs in the last five matches and 11 this season.
Anna Andersson hit .250 against Purdue with nine kills, four errors in 20 attempts for a career high. Her previous best mark with .200 against Cleveland State (6-2-20) this season.
