Volleyball Blanks Illinois, 3-0, Wins 7th Consecutive Match – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 20th-ranked Ohio State (18-10 overall, 12-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team held the Illini to .078 hitting in blanking Illinois 3-0 (30-17, 30-27, 30-27). OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) scored a match-high 15 kills and added 11 digs in OSU seventh consecutive win. Other Buckeyes in double-figure kills included Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) and Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) with 12 each. Illinois (12-16, 6-13) received a team-high seven kills from Melissa Vandrey (Jr., Chicago, Ill.) and six from Rachel VanMeter (Fr., Spartanburg, S.C.).
With Ohio State leading 6-5 in game one, a Higgins kill and two by Gordon made it 9-5. At 13-10, OSU, a Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) kill and an Illinois error made it 15-10. A Vandrey kill cut the margin to 15-11. A Gordon kill made it 16-11 and started an eight-point run with Virtue serving an ace to make it 17-11. After an Illinois time out, three Gordon kills were followed by two from Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and one from Higgins to complete the run at 22-12. A Buckeye error made it 23-12. Draeger’s kill made it 24-12. An Illinois block by Sue Webber (Sr., Herscher, Ill.) and VanMeter made it 24-13. An Illini error made it 25-13. Webber’s kill cut the lead to 25-14. Kills by Draeger and Virtue and an Illinois error made it 28-14. A Buckeye error made it 28-15. A kill by Betsy Eiserman (Sr., Lake Bluff, Ill.) and a Buckeye error cut the lead to 28-17. Game two saw Illinois take a 4-3 lead off a Buckeye error. An Illinois error then tied the game at four. Kills by Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) and Stiling and a block by Virtue and Stiling made it 7-4, OSU. A Webber kill and an ace serve by Lisa Argabright (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) closed the lead to 7-6. Errors moved the score to 8-7. An Illini error and a Jessica Belter (So., St. Peters, Mo.) kill made it 9-8. A kill from Gordon, an OSU error and a Higgins kill made it 11-9. A Buckeye error cut it to 11-10. Kills by Andersson and Argabright made it 12-11. An Illinois error and an Andersson kill made it 14-11. A kill and ace serve by Argabright cut the lead to 14-13. Errors moved the score to 15-14. OSU scored the next five points to open up a 20-14 lead. The run began with kills from Virtue and Higgins, an ace from Stiling, a Gordon-Higgins blocks and a Gordon kill. Illinois countered with a five-point run to tie the game at 20. A Webber kill started the run. Blocks by Eiserman and O’Bryan and a solo by Vandrey caused OSU to call time out at 20-17. A Buckeye error, a Erin Virtue (So., St. Charles, Ill.) ace and a block by Eiserman and O’Bryan completed the run. A kill by OSU’s Virtue and two Illinois error stopped the run at 23-20 as Illinois called time out. A Vandrey kill and an OSU error cut the margin to 23-22. An Illinois error and a Eiserman kill made it 24-23. Gordon’s kill and a block by Draeger and Stiling opened a 26-23 Buckeye lead. Errors moved the score to 27-24. Two Argabright kill cut the magin to 27-26. Stiling made it 28-26 with a kill. Webber countered with a kill at 28-27. A Gordon solo block and a Higgins kill ended the game at 30-27. Ohio State hit .222 for the game to .026 for Illinois.
Ohio State opened game three up 2-0 with an Illinois error and a Higgins kill. A Vandrey kill cut it to 2-1. Another Higgins kill, a block by Stiling and Draeger and an Illinois error made it 5-1. Vandrey countered with a kill at 5-2. Errors moved the score to 6-3. An ace serve by Rasa Virsilaite (Fr., Kaunas, Lithuania) and an OSU error cut the lead to 6-5. A Stiling kill and an OSU error made it 7-6. Kills by Gordon and Higgins and an Illini error made it 10-6. Errors moved the score to 11-7. An Illinois error and an Argabright kill made it 12-8. Kills by Gordon and Argabright made it 13-9. Kills by Higgins and Draeger made it 15-9. Kills from VanMeter and Draeger made it 16-10. A Webber solo block made it 16-11. A Stiling kill and a block by Stiling and Higgins made it 18-11 as Illinois called time out. An Illinois error and a Webber kill made it 19-12. A Stiling kill and an OSU error made it 20-13. Errors moved the score to 21-14. Kills by Higgins and Argabright made it 22-15. A Buckeye error and a block by Eiserman and Argabright cut the margin to 22-17. An Illini error and a Draeger kill made it 24-17. Kills by Argabright and Gordon made it 25-18. Vandrey and Stiling exchanged kill to made it 26-19. A VanMeter kill and her solo block cut the lead to 26-21. A Buckeye error and a Stiling kill made it 27-22. An Illinois error and a VanMeter kill made it 28-23. An Argabright-Virsilaite block cut the lead to four at 28-24. Stiling’s kill set match point at 29-24. An Argabright kill, an ace serve by Webber and a Virsilaite kill stopped thee match points to cut the lead to 29-27 as Ohio State called time out. Gordon ripped a kill down the line for match-point, winning the game, 30-27. The Buckeyes hit .270 for the game to .132 for Illinois.
Ohio State hit .321 for the match to .078 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 55-33 advantage in kill while Illinois out served OSU, 5-2. The Buckeyes gave up 10 service errors to six for the Illini. Defensively, Ohio State had a 53-33 margin in digs with OSU’s Rebecca Kastein (Fr., Mt. Lebanon, Pa.) recording a match-high 14. The Illini had a 10-8 advantage in blocks with O’Bryan collecting a match-high four for the Illini with OSU’s Higgins (1-3) and Stiling adding four each. OSU’s setter Katie Virtue collected a match-high 43 assists to 29 for Illinois’ Eiserman.
Ohio State closes out the home season with a 7 p.m. Saturday match against Purdue in St. John Arena.

Ohio State has won its last seven matches and 12 of 14 since starting 0-5 in Big Ten play. OSU has held the last seven opponents to .174 or lower hitting percentage.
Katie Virtue equaled her career-high of six kills against Illinois for the third time. She also had 43 assists, nine digs, an ace serve and a solo block against the Illini. She now has 5,480 career assists and need four to pass OSU career leader Laura Davis (1991-94) with 5,483. Virtue played in her fourth match against her sister, Erin, a sophomore at Illinois. Katie has won all four meetings.
Stephanie Higgins hit .556 against Illinois to set a new career high. She had 12 kills, two errors in 18 attempts against the Illini. Her previous best was .538 (7-0-13) against Cleveland State.
Suzie Stiling, with 12 kills against Illinois, now has 1,331 career kills and has moved into a tie for seventh on the OSU career kills list. She tied Dana Stearns (1997-00).
With 15 kills against Illinois, Stacey Gordon has 1,153 career kills. She has moved to 13th on the OSU career kills list passing Anne Botica (1998-01) with 1,151.
Stacey Gordon’s 15 kills extends her streak of consecutive double-figure kill matches to 44. In her career, she has had double-figure kill in 57 of 59 matches. Gordon’s 11 digs in the match is her 21st double-figure dig match this season.
