COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 25th-ranked Ohio State (17-10 overall, 11-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team began the Big Ten season 0-5. Tonight, the Buckeyes made their mark in the conference by upsetting sixth-ranked and Big Ten Champion Minnesota (29-4, 16-2), 3-0 (30-23, 30-28, 30-25). The OSU win is the sixth consecutive for the Buckeyes who have won 11 of the last 13 since the 0-5 beginning in conference play. Leading the Buckeyes to victory were Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) with a match-high 24 kills and Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) adding 11. Cassie Busse (Jr., Prior Lake, Minn.) recorded a team-high 11 kills for Minnesota with Erin Martin (So., Ames, Iowa) adding nine.
Game one had nine early ties, the last at 13. A Gordon kill and a block by Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) and Draeger made it 15-13, OSU. Gopher Trisha Bratford (So., Reseda, Calif.) made it 15-14 with a kill. A Higgins kill and two Minnesota errors gave the Buckeyes a 18-14 lead. Ohio State held a 28-21 lead before two OSU errors cut the lead to 28-23. Gordon’s kill set game point at 29-23. Draeger aced the serve to take the game, 30-23 and lead the match, 1-0. Ohio State hit .270 for the game to .105 for Minnesota.
Ohio State opened game two with kills from Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) and Gordon and a Minnesota error for a 3-0 lead. At 4-1, two Gordon kills, a Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) ace serve and a Gopher error made it 8-1, OSU. OSU held an 12-5 lead before Minnesota scored six straight points to cut the margin to 12-11. Tied at 20-all, two Martin kills gave Minnesota a 22-20 lead. Kills by Stiling and Gordon and a Gopher error returned the lead to Ohio State at 23-22. A Martin kill tied the game at 23. A Bethany Brafford (Jr., Mansfield, Ohio)-Busse block made it 24-23, Minnesota. OSU tied the game at 24 with a Gordon kill. After an error from each team made it 25-all, a Busse kill made it 26-25, Gophers. OSU tied the game with a Higgins kill at 26. Jessica Byrnes (Fr., Minnetonka, Minn.), with a kill, gave Minnesota a 27-26 lead. Higgins tied the game with a kill at 27 and a Draeger kill put Ohio State ahead at 28-27. A Virtue kill set game point at 29-27. A Buckeye error closed the margin to 29-28. A Draeger kill closed out the game at 30-28, giving Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .375 for the game to .278 for Minnesota. OSU’s Gordon produced a game-high 11 kills for the Buckeyes.
Tied at four-all in game three, Minnesota opened up a 9-5 lead as Ohio State called time out. The Gophers held a 16-13 lead until a Gordon kill and two from Draeger tied the game at 16. Tied at 18, kills by Stiling and Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden), a Virtue-Stiling block and a Virtue ace serve opened a 22-18 Ohio State lead. Errors by both teams moved the score to 23-19. A Lindsey Vander Well (So., Prinsburg, Minn.) block and a Gopher error made it 24-20. Kills by Busse and Higgins moved the score to 25-21. Kills by Busse and Byrnes cut the lead to 25-23. Kills by Gordon and Byrnes moved the score to 26-24. A Draeger kill and a Stiling-Draeger block gave the Buckeyes a 28-24 lead. Byrnes, with a kill, cut the lead to 28-25. OSU reached match point with a kill by Stiling at 29-25. A Gopher error closed the game at 30-25, giving Ohio State a 3-0 victory over sixth-ranked Minnesota. Ohio State hit .217 for the game to .148 for Minnesota.
For the match, Ohio State hit .285 to .174 for Minnesota. The Buckeyes had a 55-42 advantage in kills while the Gophers had a 4-3 margin in ace serves. Minnesota gave up nine service errors to eight for OSU. The Buckeyes had a 50-43 edge in digs with Minnesota’ Paula Gentil (Fr., Fortaleza Ceara’, Brazil) recording a match-high 18. The Gophers out blocked Ohio State, 10-8. UM’s Brafford and OSU’s Stiling shared match-high honors with five assist blocks each. Virtue, for the Buckeyes had a match-high 45 assists with Gopher Vander Well recording 31.
Ohio State closes out the regular season with home contests against Illinois, Fri., Nov. 29 and Purdue, Sat., Nov. 30. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.

Stacey Gordon, with 24 kills at Minnesota has extended her streak of consecutive double-figure kill matches to 43. She has had 56 of 58 double-figure kill matches in her career. Gordon has had 20 or more kills in 28 matches in her career.
Stacey Gordon had 12 digs at Minnesota and has had 20 matches this season with double-figure digs.
Rebecca Kastein equaled her career-high of 14 digs against Minnesota. She has had nine matches with double-figure digs, including the last three.
Katie Virtue, with 62 assists against Iowa and 45 at Minnesota now has 5,437 career assists. She needs 47 to become OSU’s career assist leader and would pass Laura Davis (1991-94), the current leader with 5,483.
Katie Virtue with 12 digs on the weekend (4 at Iowa, 8 at Minnesota) has 850 for her career. That total makes her tied for 19th on the OSU career list with Audrey DiPronio (1988-90).
With an assist block at Iowa and four at Minnesota, Katie Virtue raised her career total to 216 and moved to 12th on the OSU career list. Virtue passed Margie Meyers (1984-87) with 215.
Katie Virtue’s five total blocks gives her 233 career total blocks (17 solos, 216 assists) and places her 14th on the OSU career list. She passed Audrey DiPronio (1988-90) with 228 (37-191).
Shelly Draeger records 24 digs in the weekend matches with 13 at Iowa and 11 at Minnesota. She now has 861 career digs and has moved to 18th on the OSU career digs list.
