Volleyball Defeats Iowa, 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (16-10 overall, 10-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, with match-highs of 23 kills and 16 digs from Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) defeated Iowa 3-1 (27-30, 30-23, 30-19, 30-18) Friday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The victory was OSU’s 10th in its last 12 matches after starting the Big Ten season 0-5. Also contributing double-figure kills for OSU were Stephanie Higgins (Fr., Biggsville, Ill.) with 13, Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) 12, Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) 11 and Amanda Miller (Fr., Littleton, Colo.) 10. Hawkeye Kelli Chesnut (Sr., Iowa City, Iowa) scored a team-high 15 kills with Echaka Agba (Fr., LaPorte, Ind.) adding 11 and Laura Simpson (So., Sassafras, Australia) 10.
Iowa took the early lead in game one until a block by Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden) and Stiling tied the game at 22. OSU tied the game at 23 with a Draeger kill and again at 26 with a Gordon kill. Hawkeye kills by Chesnut and Simpson and a block by Simpson and Abby Tjaden (Jr., Eldora, Iowa) set game point at 29-26. A Higgins kill cut the lead to 29-27 but a Chesnut-Simpson block gave Iowa a 30-27 win. The Hawkeyes hit .225 for the game to .047 for the Buckeyes.
Tied at nine-all in game two, a kill by Stiling and an Iowa error opened an 11-9 Ohio State lead. The Hawkeyes closed to one point at 18-17 and 19-18 before the Buckeyes scored six consecutive points to open a 25-18 lead. Two kills each from Miller and Stiling, one from Katie Virtue (Sr., St. Charles, Ill.) and a Stiling-Miller block complete the scoring run. With a 28-23 Buckeye lead, kills from Higgins and Gordon ended the game at 30-23. Ohio State hit .214 for the game to .098 for Iowa. Tied at 12-all in game three, Ohio State scored the next five points to open a 17-12 lead. A Higgins kill and an Iowa error made it 14-12 as Iowa called time out. Another Hawkeye error and kill from Higgins and Gordon completed the scoring run. With a 28-19 lead for the Buckeyes, a Gordon kill and an ace serve by Stiling ended the game at 30-19. Ohio State hit .447 for the game to .133 for Iowa.
Trailing 0-1 to Iowa in game four, Ohio State scored five straight points with two kills each from Gordon and Stiling and a Hawkeye error. At 11-9, OSU, a kill by Draeger, two aces from Stiling, a Hawkeye error and a Miller kill opened a 16-9 Buckeye lead. Ohio State took the lead to 10 at 27-17 with a block by Virtue and Stiling. A Hawkeye error made it 28-17. A Miller kill and an Iowa error ended the game at 30-18 and gave OSU a 3-1 win in the match. OSU hit .429 for the game to .128 for Iowa.
Ohio State hit .274 for the match while Iowa hit .147. The Buckeyes had a 72-50 advantage in kills for the contest. OSU had a 6-0 margin in ace serves with Stiling and Draeger scoring two each. Iowa gave up nine service errors to eight for OSU. The Buckeyes had a 58-44 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon recording a match-high 16. Iowa out blocked Ohio State, 15-8. Hawkeyes Simpson, Chesnut and Tjaden recorded a match-high six assist blocks each. OSU’s Virtue had 62 assists in the match to Iowa’s Jitka Stehnova’s (Odelena Voda, Czech Rep.) 43.
Ohio State continues the two-match road trip with a 7 p.m. contest at Minnesota (29-3, 16-1) Saturday.
Ohio State Notes:
Amanda Miller recorded career-highs of 10 kills and four digs against Iowa. She also hit a career-high .364 (10-2-22).
Stephanie Higgins equaled her season-high of 13 against Iowa. She previously had 13 at Purdue.
Shelly Draeger had 13 digs at Iowa to equal her season high for the third time.
Stacey Gordon’s 23 kills extend her streak of consecutive double-figure kill matches to 42. She has had 55 double-figure kill matches in her career in 57 total matches. Gordon has had 20 or more kills in 27 matches in her career.
Stacey Gordon, with 16 digs, has had double-figure digs in 19 matches this season and 38 in her career.
