Volleyball Loses 3-1 At No. 15 Wisconsin – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State (11-10 overall, 5-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (30-18, 22-30, 30-23, 32-30) decision at No. 15 Wisconsin (17-6, 8-4) Saturday. The Buckeyes trailed 2-1 in the match, but held a three-point lead, 27-24, in game four before the Badgers overcame the margin to win the game, 32-30 and win the match.
OSU’s Stacey Gordon (So., Oshawa, Ontario) had a team-high 20 kills for the Buckeyes with Shelly Draeger (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) adding 13 and Suzie Stiling (Sr., Glenview, Ill.) 11. Wisconsin’s Erin Bryd (Sr., Glen Ellyn, Ill.) scored a match-high 21 kills with Lori Rittenhouse (Sr., Mankato, Minn.) adding 11 for the Badgers.
Wisconsin broke a three-all tie in game one with six consecutive points to take a 9-3 lead. Kills by Jill Odenthal (So., Geneva, Ill.) and Sheila Shaw (Fr., Muskego, Wis.), two blocks by Morgan Shields (Sr., Watertown, Wis.) and Shaw, a Korie Gardner (Jr., West Bend, Wis.) ace serve and a Buckeye error completed the run. Wisconsin continued to build the lead, taking the game, 30-18. The Badgers hit .273 for the game to -.057 for OSU.
From a two-all tie in game two, Ohio State produced five consecutive points to build a 7-2 lead. The Buckeye run had two kills from Gordon, one by Stiling, a solo block by Stiling and a Stiling-Katie Virtue (St. Charles, Ill.) block. After a Buckeye error made it 7-3, three Wisconsin errors pushed the OSU lead to 10-3. Leading 19-10, a Gordon kill and two Badger errors opened a 12-point lead for the Buckeyes. Wisconsin would close to within six points several times before OSU closed out the game at 30-22. Ohio State hit .462 for the game to .000 for Wisconsin. Game three saw Wisconsin break a four-all tie with blocks by Rittenhouse and Amy Hultgren (Sr., Spence, Iowa) and Rittenhouse and Shaw along with a Buckeye error to take a 7-4 lead. Trailing 8-5, two Gordon kills cut the Badger lead to 8-7. The Badgers the scored the next six consecutive points to open a 14-7 lead. Ohio State closed the margin to five-points at 23-18 before the Badgers ran the next five points to open a 28-18 lead. A Buckeye error set game point at 29-19. OSU scored the next four points with a Draeger kill, two Anna Andersson (Fr., Angelholm, Sweden)-Stiling blocks and a Wisconsin error to cut the margin to 29-23. Wisconsin closed out the game with a Byrd kill for a 30-23 Badger win. Wisconsin hit .344 for the game to .086 for Ohio State.
From a 1-0 Wisconsin lead in game four, Ohio State scored five straight points with kills by Gordon and Andersson, a Virtue-Stiling block and two Badger errors. The Buckeyes had the lead to five at 13-8 but Wisconsin kept it close and trailed by one at 23-22 off a Rittenhouse kill. Two Stiling kills and a Badger error gave Ohio State a 26-22 lead. Blocks by Hultgren and Odenthal and Odenthal and Shaw cut the Buckeye lead to 26-24. Kills by OSU’s Gordon and UW’s Odenthal made it 27-25. A Buckeye error cut the lead to 27-26. Gordon and Odenthal exchanged kill moving the score to 28-27. A Byrd kill tied the game at 28. A Buckeye error set match point for Wisconsin at 29-28. A Badger error tied the game at 29. Byrd’s kill made it 30-29 and set match point two. A Draeger kill tied the game at 30. A Byrd kill made it 31-30 and set match point three. Wisconsin closed out the match with a Hultgren-Odenthal block to end the game at 32-30. The Badgers hit .250 for the game to .255 for the Buckeyes.
Wisconsin hit .219 for the match to .175 for the Buckeyes. The Badgers had a 62-57 advantage in kills and out served the Buckeyes, 6-4. OSU gave up nine service errors to eight for Wisconsin. Ohio State had a 45-42 advantage in digs with OSU’s Gordon picking up a match-high 15 and UW’s Byrd recording a team-high 10. The Badgers controlled the net with a 21-9 margin in blocks. UW’s Shaw recorded a match-high 10 assists with Rittenhouse adding eight total blocks on two solos and six assists. OSU’s Stiling had a team-high seven blocks with a solo and six assists. Wisconsin Shields recorded a match-high 50 assists in the match to OSU’s Virtue with 49.
Ohio State now returns home for a four-match home stand beginning next Friday. The Buckeyes host Michigan at 7 p.m., Fri., Nov. 8 and Michigan State at 7 p.m., Sat., Nov. 9.
