Columbus, Ohio- The Ohio State rowing team closed off a successful fall season by sweeping the varsity events at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville, Va. The Buckeye first varsity 8 took its second-consecutive Rivanna Romp varsity 8 title with a time of 13 minutes, 39.4 seconds, beating out Virginia’s first varsity 8 (13:40.5), the Clemson first 8 (13:51.2) and Virginia’s second 8 (13:54.8). Ohio State’s third 8 finished fifth (14:14.2), while the team’s second boat finished seventh (14:31.8).
The Buckeye second varsity 4 was victorious in the varsity 4 race. The boat, made up of rowers from the team’s first 8, took the varsity 4 competition at 15:08.9. The boat was followed by Virginia’s first 4 (15:12.5), the Ohio State first 4 (15:15.2), also made up of members of Ohio State’s first 8, and the Virginia second 4, which finished at 15:39.8. Ohio State’s third 4 finished 11th with a time of 17:15.1.
In the novice competition, a pair of Buckeye boats filled with athletes rowing competitively for the first time took eighth and 11th in the novice race. The Buckeye first novice 8 finished at 16:35.4, while the second 8 finished with a time of 17:07.2. Virginia’s first novice 8 won the competition (15:09.9).
Ohio State also took first place in an exhibition varsity quad race.
“Virginia is a very talented and proud rowing program,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “We are extremely fortunate that we were able to win as many races as we did today. We were fortunate to win the (varsity 8) race, because Virginia threw everything they had at us. This is a solid way to end the fall.”
The regatta, held today at the Rivanna Reservoir, included Virginia, North Carolina, William & Mary, Clemson and Ohio State.
The team will be away from action until the opening of the Spring 2003 season, where the Buckeyes will vie for their second-consecutive Big Ten title. The Spring season begins March 29-30 with a trip to the Stanford Invitational in Redwood Shores, Calif.
