Volleyball Wins Adidas Invitational, Now 7-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – %^$The 17th-ranked Ohio State (7-0) women’s volleyball squad, with a 3-0 (30-22, 30-18, 30-14) victory over Evansville (2-5) captured the Loyola (Ill.) Adidas/Clairol Invitational in Chicago, Ill. Saturday. OSU’s Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) and Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) collected 13 kills each for the Buckeyes while Jennifer Harseim had a team-high nine kills for Evansville.%^$
%^$OSU trailed 21-20 in game one before a kill by Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) tied the game at 21. The Buckeyes scored the next five points off an Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill) and Draeger block, two kills by Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario), another Baker-Draeger block and a block by Baker and Gordon to take a 26-21 lead. An Evansville kill by Jessica Kiefer cut the OSU margin to 26-22. An error by the Aces made it 27-22. Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio), with an ace serve, expanded the lead to 28-22 and back-to-back kills by Gordon closed the game at 30-22. The Buckeyes hit .310 for the game to .056 for the Aces.%^$
%^$Ohio State trailed by five, at 9-4, before outscoring Evansville 8-1, to take a 12-10 lead with a four-point run on the serving of Botica. The Buckeyes expanded the lead going on to a 30-18 victory in game two. OSU hit .324 for the game to .214 for Evansville.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes opened game three with a 2-0 lead. Ohio State quickly built an 11-1 lead and never trailed the rest of the game. The Buckeyes closed the game with a kill by Trine Melsether (Fr., Aalesund, Norway) to win the game, 30-14 and capture the Invitational Championship. Ohio State hit .560 for the game, making no hitting errors, while Evansville hit .065.%^$
%^$Ohio State hit .386 for the match to .105 for Evansville. The Buckeyes had a 43-32 advantage in kills and had a 37-29 margin in digs. OSU’s Botica had a team-high 10 digs while Ace Brooke Krodel had a match-high 11. The Buckeyes had a six-to-four margin in bocks and collected nine aces to six for Evansville.%^$
%^$Ohio State continues on the road next Tuesday at 7 p.m., when they play at Cincinnati. The Buckeyes then return home for the Buckeye Classic Semifinals Friday in St. John Arena. At 5 p.m., Western Michigan plays San Diego State and Ohio State hosts West Virginia at 7 p.m. Saturday’s consolation match is at 5 p.m. with the championship match scheduled for 7 p.m.
