Volleyball Defeats South Florida 3-0 In Adidas Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (6-0) women’s volleyball squad, behind a match-high 19 kills by Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario), defeated South Florida (3-3) 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-20) in the second round of the Loyola (Ill.) Adidas Invitational Saturday afternoon in Chicago, Ill. OSU’s Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) added 12 kills and Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario) 10. Michelle Collier had a team-high 16 kills for the Bulls with Jolene Patton adding 10.
Ohio State took a 18-17 lead in game one to hold on for a 30-27 win. OSU held a 26-24 lead, but a Buckeye error cut the lead to 26-25. A Bull error put OSU ahead 27-25. A solo block by Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill) put OSU up, 28-25. A block by Baker and Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) set game point at 29-25. South Florida cut the lead to 29-27 with kills by Rachel Jobes and Patton, but a Baker kill closed the game. OSU hit .269 for the game to .180 for the Bulls.
South Florida held a 24-21 lead in game two. The Buckeyes cut the lead to 24-23 with two Botica kills. Patton’s kill made it 25-23 Bulls. A Stiling kill cut the lead to 25-24. A South Florida kill by Jobes made the Bulls lead two at 26-24. A kill by Botica and a block by Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Stiling tied the game at 26. A Buckeye service error put South Florida ahead 27-26. A Bulls ball handling error tied the game at 27. Collier’s kill gave South Florida a 28-27 advantage. An OSU kill by Gordon tied the game at 28. The Buckeyes took a 29-28 lead off a Gordon kill and closed the game with another Gordon kill to win 30-28. The Buckeyes hit .214 for the game to .204 for South Florida. South Florida held an early 13-10 lead in game three before a Gordon kill, an ace serve by Stiling and a block by Baker and Gordon tied the game at 13. OSU then outscored the Bulls, 17-7 to close game three at 30-20. Ohio State hit .381 for the game to -.023 for South Florida.
The Buckeyes hit .250 for the match to .127 for South Florida. OSU had a 56-44 advantage in kills and outdug the Bulls 62-55. South Florida’s Collier had a match-high 14 digs while OSU’s Gordon collected 13 with Botica adding 12 and Virtue 11. The Buckeyes had a 12.5 to eight margin in blocks with Baker collecting a career-high nine blocks off two solos and a career-high seven assists.
Ohio State completes tournament play this evening when they face Evansville at 5 p.m. (CT).
