COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 17th-ranked Ohio State (4-0) women’s volleyball squad collected a victory on the road tonight with a 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-12) win at Wright State (3-1). Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) and Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) shared match-high honors with 11 kills each with Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario) adding 10. Alison Sipiorski (So., Neenah, Wis.) had a team-high six kills for the Raiders.
Wright State broke a three-all tie with five consecutive points off Buckeye errors in game one to take an 8-4 lead. The Raiders expanded the lead to six (16-10) before kills by Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.), Botica and Gordon cut the margin to 16-13. A Buckeye error made it 17-13. A kill by Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) made it 17-14 with Botica, the server. She then served for eight consecutive OSU points, including four ace serves in a period of five serves. A Stiling kill and three Raider errors completed the run giving OSU a 22-17 lead. The Buckeyes kept the lead to win the game 30-23. Ohio State hit .196 for the game to .093 for Wright State.
Game two was close with the teams tied at nine. A Wright State service error, a kill by Draeger, a Raider hitting error and an ace serve by Gordon gave OSU a 13-9 lead. The Raiders closed to within one at 21-20 but the Buckeyes rebuilt a lead to win the game, 30-24. Ohio State hit .087 for the game to .049 for the Raiders.
Ohio State opened game three with a five-point run with kills by Botica, Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill), a solo block by Gordon, a kill by Gordon and an ace serve by Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.), The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 10-2 going on to win the game 30-12 to sweep the victory from the Raiders. Ohio State hit .294 in the game to -.108 for the Raiders. Ohio State hit .183 for the match to .017 for Wright State and had a 48-25 advantage in kills. The Buckeyes had an 11 to one margin in ace serves with Botica recording five and Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) three. Ohio State had a 59-48 advantage in digs with Cisco collecting 12 with Gordon and Draeger adding 11 each. The Buckeyes had an eight-seven margin in blocks with Baker and Draeger recording five assists each.
The Buckeyes return to the road this Friday at the Loyola Adidas/Clairol Invitation in Chicago, Ill. OSU plays host Loyola at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 8. They continue play at noon on Saturday against South Florida and face Evansville at 5 p.m.
