The Scarlet Course, which will host the 2002 NCAA men’s golf championship May 27-June 1, is a par 71 course for championship competition. Collins’ personal best round is a 68 fired last year at the Marshall Invitational.
Seniors Doug Wade (Lima, Ohio/Lima Central) and Ryan Dennis (Stow/Walsh Jesuit) both shot 1-under 70 for the Buckeyes. Wade’s round was a career best round.
Jim Brown, Ohio State head coach, said he was disappointed with the first round score of 300 turned in Friday by his squad.
“We played today like I thought we would play the entire tournament,” Brown said of his team’s effort Saturday. “We shot scores like we did today all last week during qualifying. We played well today and made a move in the standings. Hopefully we can make another move tomorrow. With this field, that will be difficult.” The 54-hole tournament concludes Sunday with tee times beginning at 8 p.m. The nation’s top teams were invited to play in the tournament based in the team’s finish in the 2001 NCAA Men’s Golf National Championship tournament.
