COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (10-0 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) women’s volleyball squad, with a career-high 17 kills from Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario) defeated Indiana (3-6 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) 3-0 (30-22, 30-20, 30-27) Saturday night in St. John Arena in front of 1,002 fans. OSU’s Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) added 13 kills and Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) had 10 as the Buckeyes remain undefeated on the season. Indiana’s Christina Archibald (Fr., Belleville, Ill.) had a team-high 16 kills with Melissa Brewer (So., Bloomington, Ind.) adding eight.
In game one, with the score tied at three, Ohio State with a Gordon kill, an IU error and two ace serves from Stiling, opened a 7-3 lead. The Buckeyes held a 20-14 lead and with two kills by Botica, one from Gordon and an Indiana error expanded the lead to 24-14. The OSU margin was cut to six at 27-21 with a Archibald kill. The Buckeyes responded with kills by Botica and Draeger to set game point at 29-21. An Archibald kill cut the lead to 29-22, but a Stiling kill ended the game at 30-22. Ohio State hit .563 for game one to .364 for Indiana.
The Buckeyes broke a one-all tie with a kill by Stiling and an IU error to lead 3-1. An Archibald kill cut that lead to 3-2. Ohio State scored the next six points to take a 10-2 lead. The run began with a Stiling kill and an IU error. A Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill) kill followed and then back-to-back kills from Gordon to take the lead to 8-2 as Indiana called time out. A block by Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.) and Baker completed the run giving the Buckeyes an eight-point lead. At 18-11, OSU had a four-point run including an IU error and kills by Baker, Gordon and Botica to open a 22-11 lead as Indiana called time out. The Buckeyes reached game point with a Gordon kill at 29-19. Archibald countered with a kill to make it 29-20, but OSU closed out the game with a kill by Baker, winning 30-20. The Buckeyes hit .452 for the game to .125 for the Hoosiers. Kills by Draeger and Stiling opened game three for OSU. Disney Bronnenberg (Sr., Bloomington, Ind.) responded with a kill for the Hoosiers. An IU error made it 3-1, OSU. Three consecutive Buckeye errors put Indiana ahead, 4-3. At six-all, a kill by Monique Pritz (So., Columbus, Ind.) and two from Brewer opened a 9-6 Hoosier lead. In a close game, Indiana broke a 14-14 tie with a kill by Pritz. An OSU error and a block by Bronnenberg and Brewer and a Hillary Toivonen (Jr., Muncie, Ind.) kill opened an 18-14 IU lead. Buckeye kills by Baker and Botica and an IU kill from Brewer cut the lead to three at 19-16. Two Archibald kills expanded the Indiana lead to 21-16 as Ohio State called a time out. A Draeger kill and an OSU error advanced the score to 22-17. Two Indiana errors and a block by Gordon and Stiling cut the lead to 22-20 as the Hoosiers called time out. Kills by Gordon and Stiling evened the game at 22. Archibald responded with a kill to put IU ahead 23-22. A Gordon kill tied the game at 23. An IU error and kills by Gordon and Baker opened a 26-23 Ohio State lead as Indiana called time out. The Buckeyes held the lead and with a Botica kill ended the game at 30-27. The Buckeyes hit .385 for the game to .300 for the Hoosiers.
Ohio State hit a season-high .461 in the match while Indiana hit .267, an opponent season-high against the Buckeyes. Individually Baker hit .800 (8 kills, 0 errors, 10 attempts), Draeger .692 (10-1-13), Stiling .409 (13-4-22) and Gordon .394 (17-4-33). OSU had a 59-42 advantage in kills and had a 39-23 margin in digs. OSU’s Botica recorded a match-high nine digs with Gordon adding eight. The Buckeyes outserved Indiana six to two, with Stiling and Gordon recording two aces each. OSU had an eight to five advantage in blocking with Stiling and Baker picking up four total blocks each off a solo and three assists.
The Buckeyes continue with the home-court stand with a match next Wednesday against No. 6 Penn State and on Friday against Purdue. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
