COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 15th-ranked Ohio State (8-0) women’s volleyball squad, behind a career-high 14 kills from Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario), remained undefeated with a 3-0 (30-20, 30-20, 30-28) victory over Cincinnati (2-4) Tuesday night in the Shoemaker Center. Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) and Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) added 13 kills each as the Buckeyes begin to prepare for Big Ten Conference play this weekend against Illinois (6-1) at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 21, and Indiana (3-4) at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 22. For the Bearcats Bonita Wise and Becky Stahl shared team-high honors with eight kills each.
Ohio State trailed 10-9 in game one before two Cincinnati errors put OSU ahead 11-10. A Botica kill made it 12-10. A Wise kill for the Bearcats cut the margin to 12-11, but a Stiling kill and a block by Stiling and Botica pushed the lead to 14-11. With OSU ahead 15-13, Gordon scored kills on her next four swings to open a 20-15 lead. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to win 30-20. Ohio State hit .406 for the game to .108 for Cincinnati.
The Buckeyes held a 4-3 lead in game two when a Gordon kill, a Botica kill and two assist blocks from Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill) and Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.) put Ohio State ahead 8-3. OSU held the lead, expanding it to 11 (22-11), before winning the game 30-20. Ohio State hit .265 to .051 for Cincinnati in the game.
Cincinnati opened game three with a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes responded with five points off a Botica kill, a block by Stiling and Botica, an ace by Shelly Draeger (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and two Bearcat errors. Cincinnati tied the game at six and took a 7-6 lead off an OSU error. After an exchange of points, Cincinnati took a 10-9 lead. The Buckeyes, with two Bearcat errors, two Draeger kills and a Baker kill went ahead 14-10. OSU expanded the lead to 17-11 with kills by Draeger, Botica and Stiling. Cincinnati then outscored Ohio State 8-2 with the help of five Buckeye errors to tied the game at 19-19. Ohio State made a 6-2 run taking a 25-21 lead. A Stiling kill set match point for Ohio State at 29-24. Cincinnati held off four match points off OSU errors and a Stahl kill (29-28) before Gordon’s kill closed the game at 30-28. Ohio State hit .265 for the game to .146 for Cincinnati.
For the match, the Buckeyes hit .304 as a team to .103 for Cincinnati. OSU had a 52-37 advantage in kills. Ohio State had a 6.5 to 4 advantage in blocks with Baker recording a match-high four assists blocks. The Buckeyes had a 42-39 margin in digs with Gordon recording a match-high 13. OSU had an 8-4 advantage in service aces with OSU’s Virtue serving a match-high three.
