Volleyball Opens Season With 3-0 Win Over Illinois-Chicago – Ohio State Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio – The 16th-ranked Ohio State (1-0) women’s volleyball squad opened the 2001 season with a 3-0 (30-15, 30-12, 30-16) win over Illinois-Chicago (0-1) in the first round of the Buckeye Invitational. In the opening first round match, Tennessee Tech (1-0) defeated Ohio (0-1) 3-2 (22-30, 30-22, 32-30, 21-30, 19-17). Second round action begins at 11 a.m. Saturday when Ohio State hosts Tennessee Tech and then at 1 p.m. Ohio plays Illinois-Chicago. The third round begins at 5 p.m. with Illinois-Chicago playing Tennessee Tech and at 7 p.m. Ohio State hosts Ohio.
Ohio State, behind a match-high 16 kills by Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.), needed only 77 minutes to defeat Illinois-Chicago. Also scoring double-figure kills for the Buckeyes were Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) with 14 and Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario) with 10. Teaha Shepperd (So., Kalamazoo, Mich.) had a team-high six kills for Illinois-Chicago.
Ohio State hit .417 for the match to -.031 for the Flames. The Buckeyes had a 45-26 advantage in digs with OSU’s Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) recording a match-high 11. OSU had a five to two advantage in aces with Cisco serving a match-high two. Ohio State had a seven-to-four margin in blocks with Botica (1 solo, 2 assists), Stiling (1-2) and Erin Baker (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill) (0-3) each picking up three total blocks.
