Three Buckeyes Earn Bid To U.S. Gymnastics Championships – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Buckeyes earned the right to compete in the U.S. Gymnastics Championships after besting the competition at the Gym Jam Men’s National Qualifier in Santa Barbara, Calif., over the weekend. Dick Huntwork (Jr., Pickerington, Ohio), Michael Evans ( Jr., Houston, Texas) and Daren Lynch (Londonderry, N.H.) were among 66 gymnasts competing in the event. The Top 13 all-around finishers in the qualifier gain automatic entry into the championships, held Aug. 8-11 in Philadelphia. The Top 2 scorers among the five-event, four-event and three-event specialists also compete in the championships, provided their total is greater than the respective totals of the ranking all-arounders.
Huntwork topped the list for the Buckeyes, placing 10th in the qualifiers with an all-around score of 49.600. The junior tied for second on floor exercises, recording a score of 9.000. He also took fourth on parallel bars with a score of 8.550. Evans finished not far behind, claiming 12th. He ended the competition with Top 15 scores on floor exercises (8.500/10th), vault (8.900/15th) and high bar (8.250/13th). Lynch claimed the highest total among the four-event specialists, placing fifth on rings and seventh on parallel bars to secure his spot in the championships.
A fourth Buckeye will join the group in Philadelphia. Raj Bhavsar (Jr., Houston, Texas) was pre-qualified for the championships and did not have to compete in Santa Barbara. Bhavsar took the opportunity to practice three events however, recording scores of 8.250 on floor exercises, 7.750 on pommel horse and 9.100 on vault. Also competing in the qualifier was OSU sophomore Jamey Houle, who finished 22nd with an all-around score of 48.000. Houle’s highest finish of the event came on high bar, where he took fifth with a score of 8.750.
