COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s women’s volleyball student-athlete Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill./St. Francis (Wheaton) H. S.) received the Best Setter Award at the Sibillini Tournament in Montemonaco, Italy. This marked the second-consecutive year Virtue has been so honored. Virtue and OSU teammate Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South H. S.) participated in the week-long (under-20) volleyball tournament during the first week of July. They played for VolleyHut.Com, an eight-player squad coached by Dietre Collins of Nevada-Las Vegas, finishing second in the tournament.
Virtue was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1999 and was named to the Asics/Volleyball Magazine Freshman All-America Team. In 2000 she was an All-Big Ten selection and was named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mideast Region squad.
Pool play began July 2 with VolleyHut.Com facing Bulli & Pupe (Italy) and came away with a 3-1 victory. July 3 saw Stiling and Virtue competing in a beach 3 on 3 tournament, each playing for a different team. Each squad finished second in its pool. That evening VolleyHut.com faced Slavia Bratislava (Slovakia), coming up short in a five-game loss. July 4 saw the second round of the beach tournament with both USA teams losing close matches. That night VolleyHut.com faced Olomuc (Czech Republic), winning 3-1, and then celebrated the victory and America’s Independence Day by singing the National Anthem. On July 5th VolleyHut.com played Vasas (Budapest, Hungary) in the quarterfinals, advancing to the semifinals with a 3-0 victory. July 6th was the USA showdown with VolleyHut.com facing the other USA team, About.Com, in one semifinal. The 3-0 win by VolleyHut.com advanced the squad to the championship match on July 7 against Postar (Belgrade, Yugoslavia). Despite a great effort, VolleyHut.Com lost 3-1 to finish second in the tournament. About.Com lost 3-0 to Slavia Bratislava (Slovakia) and finished fourth.
