BUCKEYES RANKED NO. 7
OSU is tied for No. 7 nationally, a program record, in the season’s first USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Brown University, whom OSU fell to last weekend, garnered 19 first-place votes to claim the top spot. USRowing, in conjunction with the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) will conduct weekly polls for Women’s NCAA Division I Collegiate Varsity Eights throughout the season. Head coach Andy Teitelbaum said the ranking is a definite positive, but was quick not to make too much of it. “The ranking is nice, but the reality is the rankings don’t matter once you’re on the water,” he said. “At the same time, it’s nice to be recognized. We’re just going to keep trying to get faster.”
CINCINNATI’S INAGURAL SEASON
OSU will face a young, developing program this weekend. The Bearcats are in their first year at the varsity level. “This is the first year as a varsity program,” Teitelbaum said. “So, they’re definetely in a building phase. I’m not really sure to expect.” Tetelbaum said the main focus of this weekend is to improve from last weekend. “We’re focusing on correcting some of the mistakes and improving on some areas that were lacking last weekend. Every race is a good opportunity to get better. Our focus is really on ourselves and rowing the best race we can.”
STAYING PUT
After two weekends on the road, Teitelbaum said his squad is anxious to stay put for the weekend. “It will be nice racing at home and not having to travel,” he said. “Racing on familiar water is always an advantage. Not having to travel, we’ve worked very hard this week,” Teitelbaum said. “We don’t have to travel Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We will be able to get some training done for this race and future ones.”
LEARNING FROM THE PAST
Teitelbaum felt his team did not perform to its abilities when the went up against No. 1 Brown and No. 3 Princeton, but said it was a good learning experience for his team to see what it needs to do better. “We learned a great lesson last week as far as what it takes to be No. 1 and that’s where our focus is,” he said. “We’re looking foward to showing we’re faster than we were when we raced at Princeton.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Buckeyes play host to Michigan, Michigan State and Clemson Saturday, April 14 in the Buckeye Invitational, the final home race of the season.
