Men’s Golf In 20-Field Competition At 32nd-Annual Marshall Invite – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Ohio State men’s golf team will travel to Huntington, W.Va., April 6-7 to compete in the 32nd annual Marshall Invitational hosted by Marshall University. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Guyan Golf and Country Club (par 72, 6,456 yards).
Competition will come from Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisville, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Murray State, Northern Illinois, Notre Dame, Ohio University, Toledo, Western Kentucky, Wisconsin and Xavier.
Michigan took the tournament title last year with a score of 879. Iowa’s Matt Stutzman took top individual honors with a 214.
Friday will consist of two rounds starting at 8:30 a.m. The tournament will conclude with one round on Saturday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
Up Next Buckeyes Host Kepler
On April 14-15 the Buckeyes will play host to the 32nd annual Kepler Intercollegiate, named for the late Robert Kepler, OSU’s golf coach from 1938-1965. The Kepler is played on the Ohio State Scarlet Course (par 72, 7,251). The Buckeyes have won the title 19 times, including six straight between 1974-79.
Competing at the Buckeyes home tournament will be Akron, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kent State, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Penn State, Purdue, Southern Methodist, Toledo and Wisconsin.
The Buckeyes will attempt to take back the title that has eluded them since 1998. Northwestern captured the tournament title in 1999 and in 2000. Jess Daley also of Northwestern was the Kepler 2000 medalist with the score of 876.
Last Time Out
The Buckeyes last played at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State, April 2-3 at the Pasatiempo Golf Course (par 70) at Santa Cruz, Calif.
Ohio State finished in 16th place scoring, 293-307-301=901. Top finisher for the Buckeyes Ryan Dennis (Jr., Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) finished 17th overall, scoring 71-76-71=218. Mike Austin (Sr., Burton, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic) came in next for the Buckeyes, shooting a three-round total of 226 for 50th place. Justin Collins (So., Ironton, Ohio/Ironton) shot a 228 for 58th place and Jeff Olson (Jr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) finished in 68th place shooting 231. Jason Oien held the 77th spot with a three-round total of 235.
Oregon won the Western Collegiate title, scoring 284-287-279=850 and Lars Johansson of San Diego State was the medalist, scoring 65-67-74=206.
Austin Holds Career Low Round And Season Record
Mike Austin keeps improving every year and the 2001 season is no exception. Austin shot his career-low round at the Gator Invitational, Feb. 10-11. He shot a 65 in the first round beating his previous record of 66. Austin also holds the team record for this season for the lowest round and is tied with David Wagenseller for the lowest tournament this season, scoring 208, also at the Gator Invitational.
Brown Approaches 5,000 Wins
As the head coach of the men’s golf team in his 28th season, Jim Brown has been with the Buckeyes longer than any other coach on the Ohio State coaching staff. Brown is approaching his 5,000th career win for Ohio State. His record stands at 4,935-2,011-25. His best season at the helm of the Buckeyes was in 1982-83 when he led the Buckeyes to a Big Ten title with a season record of 237-3-0.
Under Brown, OSU has won 16 Big Ten titles and placed second inthe conference eight times. Brown has 151 tournament wins under his belt and a national championship in 1979.
Brown has been recognized on a national level for excellence in coaching, having been elected to the Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame in 1989.
