Ohio State Wins 33rd Annual Kepler Tourney For 22nd Time – Ohio State Buckeyes

The Buckeyes withstood the rainy conditions at the OSU Scarlet Course (par71) to win their 22nd Kepler Intercollegiate title and second tournament title of the season. The Buckeyes have not won the Kepler tournament or two tournaments in one season since 1998. The Buckeyes were in fourth place standing yesterday after two rounds but made a comeback with a tremendous team effort in round three today, shooting 298-298-297=893 for first place. Northwestern, winners of the Kepler title in 1999 and 2000, came in second today, scoring 295-295-304=894.%^$
“This win is just unbelivable considering what a hard day it was to play,” Coach Jim Brown said. “We hung in there through tough conditions and this is certainly going to help us out on an NCAA bid. Now we have a week off to prepare for Michigan State and get ready for the Big Ten Championship.”%^$
Kevin Hall (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/St.Rita) captured second place overall today and was the top finisher for the Buckeyes, scoring 76-70-73=219 just over medalist Luke Donald of Northwestern’s score of 212 (-1).This is only Hall’s second collegiate tournament. Mike Austin (Sr., Burton, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic) was next for OSU, shooting 71-74-77=222 to tie fo r sixth place. Jason Oien (Jr., New Albany/Westerville North) fired a three-round total of 224 to tie for 13th place. Justin Collins (So., Ironton, Ohio/Ironton) finished in a tie for 30th place with the score of 229 and Ryan Dennis (Jr., Stow, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) finished in 56th place with a total score of 237. Ohio State’s Jeff Olson (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Robert Morris College) competed as an individual, unattached from OSU in the tournament and tied for sixth place, shooting 74-70-78=222.%^$
The Buckeyes have a week off and will next compete at the Fossum Invitational, April 28-29, hosted by Michigan State.%^$
