Women’s Lacrosse Heads to Duquesne – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team (6-4) travels to Pittsburgh, Pa. Tuesday, to face a fiery hot Duquesne team which has won nine straight. The Buckeyes then return home hosting Virginia Tech at 2 p.m. Sunday at the friendly confines of Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Last Time
The Buckeyes split (1-1) last week, when they battled Temple and Lehigh on the road. On Friday, OSU was defeated, 15-7, by head coach Sue Stimmels alma mater Temple. The Buckeyes could never regroup from a 6-3 halftime deficit. Temple then went on to out score OSU in the second half 9-4. OSU was led by Lauren Cochran who posted a hat trick while Megan Mirick notched two goals.
Sunday, the Buckeyes bounced back after the Temple defeat by smashing Lehigh, 14-4. The Buckeyes used two three-goal runs in both halves to bury Lehigh. OSU was led by Megan Mirick and Tracey Bounds who each scored a hat trick. Shannon Wilson also chipped in with two goals and two assists Megan Barnett helped shut down the Lehigh attack by stopping 15 shots on the day.
OSU’s Captain
Taking the captain honors this season is senior Celeste Cianfrani. She was the team’s leading point scorer last season with 46 points on 25 goals and 21 assists.
The Coach
Coach Sue Stimmel is entering her sixth season as head women’s lacrosse coach at Ohio State. She has compiled a 36-33 mark in her five years.
In the program’s first year as a varsity sport, Stimmel led OSU to a respectable 5-5 record. During her five-year tenure, Buckeye lacrosse players have gained academic all-conference honors 25 times and have been OSU Scholar-Athletes 49 times. Stimmel came to Ohio State from Denison University, where she guided the Big Red to a 76-24 record during her career.
A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel received her degree in mathematics. She was a four-year starter and a member of Temple’s national championship teams in 1982 and 1984. She was named Regional All-American and was invited to the U.S. Olympic trials.
Scouting Duquesne
The Lady Dukes have won nine straight games. Duquesne is 9-1 overall and 2-0 in Atlantic-10 play. They notched their ninth win over La Salle, 12-11. Kristin Harner paced the Dukes with four goals while Meghan Hungate added three of her own.
Lady Dukes’ Coach
Kim Eldridge was hired in 1996 as the head coach of Duquene’s inaugural season. In the programs four year history, Eldridge has posted a 31-32 overall record. Prior to WMU, she had a brief stint as an assistant coach at Randolph Macon College. A 1993 graduate of William and Mary, she was an All-South First Team honoree and an All-Colonial Athletic Association as a senior. She also played field hockey at WMU.
The Series
Ohio State leads the series 4-0. Last season, the Buckeyes defeated the Lady Dukes 19-3. Tracey Bounds, Megan Mirick and Lauren Cochran all netted four goals apeice for the Buckeyes.
Scouting Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech goes into weekend with a 4-5 record overall. The Hokies were defeated last weekend by No. 16 George Mason, 16-14. Kellyn Hentz lead Virginia Tech in scoring with four goals and two assists.
Hokies’ Coach
Brooke Martin is in her fourth season as the head coach of Virginia Tech. As a student at Virginia Tech, Martin was a lacrosse team captain in 1995 and 1996. Before joining the Virginia Tech coaching staff Martin was head coach for Victoria’s junior and senior state teams in Australia.
The Series
The Buckeyes trail in the series 0-5. Last season Ohio State was defeated by Virginia Tech, 10-13.
Next Up
Next week Ohio State plays host to Vanderbilt University on April 20. The Buckeyes then travel to Notre Dame on April 25.
