Women’s Lacrosse Heads To Penn State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team (5-1) travels to State College, Pa. for the Penn State tournament. OSU will battle No. 7 North Carolina on March 30 and No. 1 Maryland on April 1.
Last Time
The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team (5-1 overall) downed St. Bonaventure, 16-4 last Sunday afternoon. With the victory, OSU snapped the Bonnies winning streak of two wins.
The OSU offense was powered by Shannon Wilson’s hat trick. Adding to the offensive power were Kylee Reade, Megan Mirick and Tracey Bounds all scoring two goals and adding one assist each.
In goal, Megan Barnett shut donw the Bonnies attack stopping five shots while only giving up four goals.
OSU’s Captain
Taking the captain honors for the upcoming season is senior, Celeste Cianfrani. She was the teams leading point scorer last season with 46 points on 25 goals and 21assists.
The Coach
Coach Sue Stimmel is entering her sixth season as head women’s lacrosse coach at Ohio State. She has compiled a 36-33 mark in her five years. In the programs first year as a varsity sport, Stimmel led OSU to a respectable 5-5 record. During her five year tenure, Buckeye lacrosse players have gained academic all-conference honors 25 times and have been OSU Scholar-Athletes 49 times. Stimmel came to Ohio State from Denison University, where she guided the Big Red to a 76-24 record during her career. A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel received her degree in mathematics. She was a four-year starter and a member of Temple’s national championship teams in 1982 and 1984. She was named Regional All-American and was invited to the U.S. Olympic trials.
Scouting North Carolina
The then No. 8 Tar Heels knocked off No. 9 Virginia on Saturday. With Saturdays victory over Virginia, they moved to No. 7 in the national poll and improve their overall season record to 4-3, and 1-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Tar Heels’ Coach
Coach Jenny Slingluff Levy has been the head coach of the tar heels womens lacrosse team since the teams inception in 1994. In the six seasons as head coach, Levy has compiled an overall record of 61-24.
The Series
The the Buckeyes trail 0-3 in the Tar Heel series. Last season, OSU lost 13-4 to the Heels.
Scouting Maryland
The 2000 NCAA Champion Terps are thetop ranked women’s lacrosse team in the country. Maryland won against Old Dominion 13-8 on their second road game of the season. This victory moved their overall season record to 7-0 (3-0 ACC). The Terps play Ohio State for the first time on Sunday.
The Terps’ Coach
Marylands head coach Cindy Timchal has been coaching women’s lacrosse for twenty years oveall and is in her eleventh season at the helm of Terrapins. Coach Timchal has yet to lose more than three games in a season and was twice named National Coach of the Year.
The Series
April 1st marks the first meeting between the Terps and the Buckeyes.
Next Up
Next week, the Buckeyes head to Philadelphia, Pa. to face off with Temple. The Buckeyes play the Owls on Friday April 6, at 3 p.m. on Geasey Field.
