Women’s Lacrosse Gears Up For Busy Week – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s lacrosse (2-1) gets ready for yet another big week. The Buckeyes hit the road to face Monmouth University March 21. The Buckeyes then get set for home battles with Denver at 4 p.m., March 23 and St. Bonaventure at noon, March 25.
Last Week
The Buckeyes defeated Colgate, 9-6, last Friday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State went into the half trailing 5-4. OSU outscored Colgate, 5-1 in the second half to put away the Red Raiders. The Buckeyes were led by Amy Tulk, who scored a hat trick in the first half for the Buckeyes. Erin Andersen and Alexia Vogler each scored two goals for the Buckeyes. Shannon WIlson picked up two points on two assists.
In goal, Hegan Barnett helped shut down the Red Raiders attack by stopping seven shots.
OSU’s Captain
Taking the captain honors for the upcoming season is senior Celeste Cianfrani. She was the team’s leading point scorer last season with 46 points on 25 goals and 21assists.
The Coach
Coach Sue Stimmel is entering her sixth season as head women’s lacrosse coach at Ohio State. She has compiled a 36-33 mark in her five years.
In the program’s first year as a varsity sport, Stimmel led OSU to a respectable 5-5 record. During her five-year tenure, Buckeye lacrosse players have gained academic all-conference honors 25 times and have been OSU Scholar-Athletes 49 times.
Stimmel came to Ohio State from Denison University, where she guided the Big Red to a 76-24 record during her career.
A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel received her degree in mathematics. She was a four-year starter and a member of Temple’s national championship teams in 1982 and 1984. She was named Regional All-American and was invited to the U.S. Olympic trials.
Scouting Monmouth
Members of the Northeast Conference, the Monmouth Hawks finished the 2000 season with an overall record of 13-4 and took second in its conference, posting a 5-1 record. The Hawks return 16 letterwinners including the NEC player of the year, Heather Bryan. Other key returnees are Kristen Hall, Erika Kauffman, Stphanie LaGrossa, Beth Watts and Stacy Makris.
Hawks’ Coach
Sue Cowperthwait is entering her first season at the helm of the women’s lacrosse program. Cowperthwait served as assistant coach for the Hawks last season and was then appointed head coach after former head coach Shari Krasnoo took the head coaching job at Boston College. Coweperthwait received her bachelor’s degree in business management from Virginia Tech in 1999.
The Series
Wednesday marks the first-ever meeting between OSU and Monmouth.
Scouting Denver
The Pioneers come to Columbus on a four-game losing streak. The Pioneers lost to American 15-8 on March 13. Denver was led by junior Dominique Cook, who scored four goals. The Pioneers will be well rested coming into the match-up, last playing March 13.
Pioneers’ Coach
Abby Burbank is entering her first season as head women’s lacrosse coach. Prior to Denver, Burbank coached lacrosse at Plymouth State, William and Mary and Amherst College. Burbank graduated from Williams College in 1988 and then earned her master’s degree in exercise and sports studies from Smith College in 1994.
The Series
OSU leads the Denver series, 2-0. In 2000, OSU defeated Denver 19-5.
Scouting The Bonnies
St. Bonaventure women’s lacrosse program enters its second season. After an 0-12 inaugural season, the Bonnies got their first vicrory in program history, 14-4, against Bermuda College. Emily Lilyea had four goals and one assist while Katie Murphy had three goals along with two assists.
St. Bonaventure’s Coach
Danie Caro is the first coach in St. Bonaventure’s school history. Caro is leading the Bonnies toward being a competitive member of the Atlantic-10 Conference. Caro served as an assistant at Colgate prior to her stop at St. Bonaventure and also had a brief stint at Manhattan College where she was the 1998 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference coach of the year. A 1993 Colgate graduate, she earned her master’s degree in education from Frostburg State in 1996
The Series
The March 25 contest marks the first meeting between OSU and St. Bonaventure.
Next Up
Next week, the Buckeyes hit the road to State College, Pa., March 30 and April 1. The Buckeyes will be playing in the Penn State Tournament, featuring perennial powerhouses North Carolina, Maryland and Penn State.
