Women’s Lacrosse Heads Into Big Weekend – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State Women’s lacrosse (1-0 overall) team gears up for a big weekend of activity. OSU plays host to Colgate University Friday, March 16, and just two days later they hit the road to face ninth ranked Boston University.%^$
%^$Last Weekend%^$
Last weekend, the Buckeyes went on to an 18-6 victory over Ohio University.%^$The Buckeyes stepped up and maintained a solid offensive attack, as they scored nine goals in each half. The Buckeyes were led by Caroline Weatherill, who scored four goals on five shots. Amy Tulk, Erin Andersen, Tracey Bounds, Shannon Wilson, and Megan Mirick, who also had one assist, each contributed to the OSU victory with two goals apiece.%^$

Taking the captain honors for the upcoming season is senior, Celeste Cianfrani. She was the teams leading point scorer last season with 46 points on 25 goals and 21assists.%^$
%^$The Coach%^$
Coach Sue Stimmel is entering her sixth season as head women’s lacrosse coach at Ohio State. She has compiled a 36-33 mark in her five years.%^$ In the programs first year as a varsity sport, Stimmel led OSU to a respectable 5-5 record. During her five year tenure, Buckeye lacrosse players have gained academic all-conference honors 25 times and have been OSU Scholar-Athletes 49 times.%^$ Stimmel came to Ohio State from Denison University, where she guided the Big Red to a 76-24 record during her career.%^$ A 1984 graduate of Temple University, Stimmel received her degree in mathematics. She was a four-year starter and a member of Temple’s national championship teams in 1982 and 1984. She was named Regional All-American and was invited to the U.S. Olympic trials.%^$
%^$Scouting Colgate%^$
Members of the Patriot League, Colgate is the preseason favorite to win its conference. Last season Colgate finished 8-6 overall and 4-1 in the conference. This season Colgate is 1-1, losing to Hofstra, 18-4, in its season opener. Colgate picked up its first win of the season against Columbia 8-7. The Red Raiders were led by Liz Brown and Jane Manning, each recording a hat trick.%^$

Katrina Silva is entering her second season as head coach of the Colgate women’s lacrosse program. In her first season at Colgate, the Red Raiders finished second in the Patriot League. Previously, Silva spent three seasons as the head coach at RoanokeCollege. While at Roanoke she compiled a record of 38-11, winning two conference titles. Silva attended Townson College where she received her bachelor’s degree in physical education. While at Townson she was the four-year starting goalie for the field hockey team and was a three year letterwinner for the lacrosse team.%^$

Colgate leads the series 2-1. Last season, OSU edged out Colgate 12-11 on Colgate’s home turf.%^$
%^$Scouting Boston%^$
Boston University is ranked ninth in the nation with a 1-1 record. Last weekend, the Terriers knocked off No. 4 North Carolina, 14-7. Boston was led by Kristin Abruzzese and Kyle Rutkowski, each scoring four goals apiece. The Terriers return 10 starters this season after only losing five from last years squad. Boston looks to guard its home turf as it did last season, where they posted a perfect record of 8-0.%^$

Sue Murphy is entering her fifth season as head coach of the women’s lacrosse program. Last season, Murphy guided Boston to its best record in school history, posting a record of 14-5, including a 5-1 conference record. Boston then earned a berth in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament, finishing with a national ranking of 17th. Prior to Boston, Murphy has had coaching duties at Muhlenburg College, where she coached three years, Oberlin College, and Boyertown H.S. In 1990, Murphy earned her bachelors degree in sports management from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.%^$

Boston leads the series, 2-0. Last season, Boston defeated OSU 11-8.%^$

Next week the Buckeyes travel to Monmouth University March 21. OSU then plays host to Denver March 23 and St. Bonaventure March 25 at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
