Cincinnati Head Coach Reed Sunahara
“Xavier is a great team and it is hard to beat them twice. They were the Atlantic 10 Champions for a reason and they showed it tonight. They played great. I think we were lucky to win.”
On losing game three
“They came out on fire. We had a letdown and we couldn’t recover. They had momentum all the way.”
“We’ve been fighting all year. I’m proud of our team. They never stopped fighting. Even after the letdown they came back and played strong.”
On the play of freshmen
“They made some great plays. Our freshman played well. They also made some freshman mistakes. I think our leadership helped. Us being here (before), I think it helped a lot. I think the experience made the difference.”
On winning the first NCAA game at UC
“We’ve been here three times since I’ve been here. You’ve got to win one eventually. Tonight was the night. (My players) deserve it. They made history tonight for Cincinnati.”
Trish Ladusaw
On the back row defense
“We’ve been working on that a lot lately. The whole year we’ve been focusing a lot on defense. They’re a great defensive team, so we knew we had to the same thing to come out on top.”
“After winning the first two, we wanted put it away in three. We wanted there to be no question as to who was the better team. After that letdown, there was just no option. We had to put that game away. We knew going into (game four) that it wasn’t going five games. We’re fortunate that we have the team that can finish.”
Xavier head coach Floyd Deaton
“We came out a little slow. Cincinnati did a nice job. They had a great scouting report. They kind of picked on us the first couple games, then we found some weaknesses and it turned into a match-it turned into quite a good match. We played hard, but we made some mistakes in the end and it hurt us.”
“We thought if we could get the ball through the block, they would have a hard time behind the block. Our emphasis was just to swing, just to keep going hard, not to letup and throw the ball around. They’re very athletic and when you start tipping the ball around they can hurt you. We wanted to establish the middle.”
