About The Head Of The Charles
The Head of the Charles is a three-mile course on the Charles River located in Boston, Mass. The Buckeyes will be competing against 53 other varsity eight boats. Ohio State competed in the 2000 edition of the Head of The Charles and finished ninth out of 57 entries. The squad this year will look to improve on that and continue on its winning ways in the 37th Head of the Charles race.
“It is a huge event,” Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said. “It is the biggest single-day rowing event in the world. We go so the kids can be part of that. There are 250,000 people along the river with thousands of competitors. It is a good opportunity to go to one of the rowing centers in the country–Boston–and be part of the giant rowing community that congregate at this regatta.
“We are only taking one varsity eight out there,” Teitelbaum said. “We are rowing in the championship event. There will be a lot of varsity college teams, the U.S. and Canadian national teams and other international clubs. It will be a high-caliber competition. It will be a good test to see where we are. We are a long way from the races that are going to matter for us. But this event is a good way to assess our talent and see how our training has progressed.”
OSU Entries
The Buckeyes will have one boat competing in the final race of the day, the championship eight division. Ohio State will be the eighth seed when the race begins Sunday.

Buckeyes Open Season With Title
Ohio State’s first varsity eight won its opening race of the season Oct. 6 in Pittsburgh, Pa., by defeating 19 other teams at the Head of The Ohio on the Allegheny River. The Buckeyes finished with a winning time of 14 minutes, 20.9 seconds over second-place Michigan State, 14:21.6. Ohio State’s second entry finished sixth with a time of 14:48.1.
Andy Teitelbaum, Ohio State head coach, said it was good to start the fall season on the right foot.
“We rowed well,” Teitelbaum said. “I was happy to have our second boat beat all the other second boats. That really shows the depth of our program. It is always good to start with a win against the caliber of teams we competed against.”
It is the second-consecutive victory for the Buckeyes at the Head of The Ohio race. Ohio State beat 25 other crews in 2000.
