COLUMBUS, Ohio – Tenth-ranked Ohio State (16-1 overall, 8-1 Big Ten) women’s volleyball, behind a match-high 19 kills from Stacey Gordon (Fr., Oshawa, Ontario), defeated Michigan (9-7, 5-4) 3-0 (30-27, 30-26, 30-23) in Cliff Keen Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. Friday evening. OSU’s Anne Botica (Sr., Windsor, Ontario) contributed 16 kills and Suzie Stiling (Jr., Glenview, Ill.) 10 in front of 1,088 fans. Michigan’s Dana Chapman (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio) had a team-high nine kills with Katrina Lehman (Sr., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) adding eight and Jennifer Gandolph (Fr., Greenwood, Ind.) seven.
Michigan opened game one with a 2-0 lead off a kill by Gandolph and an ace serve by Shannon Melka (Sr., Wheaton, Ill.). The match stayed close, having 13 ties, until a Melka kill tied the game at 26. OSU regained the lead at 27-26 with a Botica kill. Stiling’s kill gave Ohio State a two-point lead at 28-26. Gandolph countered with a kill to cut the margin to 28-27. Stiling’s kill set game point at 29-27. Stiling and Katie Virtue (Jr., St. Charles, Ill.) combined for the block to end the game at 30-27. Ohio State hit .409 for the game to .278 for Michigan. OSU’s Gordon collected eight kills with Botica and Stiling adding six each.
From a 7-7 tied in game two, OSU opened an 11-7 lead with a kill and ace serve from Gordon and two kills byBotica. A Michigan time-out and an OSU service error cut the lead to 11-8. The Buckeyes scored the next six points to open a 17-8 margin off three Botica kills, two ace serves from Nikki Cisco (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) and a Wolverine error. Michigan closed the gap to 27-24 off a Buckeye error. A Stiling kill and a Michigan error set game point at 29-24. A Michigan block by Lehman and Chapman cut the lead to 29-25. Chapman and Erin Moore (So., Tiffin, Ohio) cut the lead to three with a block but a Gordon kill ended the game at 30-26. OSU hit .233 for the game to .188 for Michigan. Gordon collected seven kills in the game with Botica adding six and Stiling five.
Michigan had a three-point lead (9-6) early in game three. OSU tied the game at 11 with a block by Stiling and Botica. Four more ties moved the score to 15-15. A Stiling service ace and two Michigan errors put OSU ahead 18-15. The Buckeyes had a 28-20 lead before UM scored three points to cut the margin to 28-23. A Michigan error set game point at 29-23 and a Stiling ace serve ended the game at 30-23. Ohio State hit .400 for the game to .053 for Michigan. Gordon and Botica had four kills each in the game.
For the match, Ohio State hit .342 to .170 for Michigan. The Buckeyes had a 59-38 margin in kills and outserved the Wolverines, 5-3. OSU had a 40-32 margin in digs with Gordon and Botica recording a match-high 11 each. Ohio State had an 8.5-8.0 advantage in blocks with Michigan’s Lehman recording a match-high five assists.
The Buckeyes continue the road trip Saturday with an 8 p.m. match with Michigan State (11-5, 4-5) in East Lansing, Mich. The Spartans lost at home Friday to Penn State 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-25).
